darknoj blog Game of Thrones LCG Live play vs online play
Recently, I was surprised to find out that there is a sub-set of A Game of Thrones the Living Card Game (AGoT) players who have never played or only extremely rarely play the game live. Some of them have no one else to play with in their area and some are just waiting for their cards to show up in the mail.
Many of these players, however have decide that they are going to try and attend a major AGoT event in the next six months, be it a regional, nationals at GenCon or worlds.
Playing AGoT live can be a bit different then playing it online from the comfort of your own home. When you play live you need to make sure you do or do not do a few things that you normally wouldn’t need to worry about when you’re playing online. For example you should wear your pants, you should hide tells and you should learn to deal with people.
Lets go over these three key items in a bit more detail.
Hide your tells: “Tells” is a term I borrowed from poker and is defined by Wikipedia as “a change in a player's behavior or demeanor that is claimed by some to give clues to that player's assessment of their hand”. Though tells in general are only of marginal use in AGoT they can still give away information. Don’t pump your arms into the air when you top deck the card you want, don’t look at your plots and then ask just before plot phase for a card count unless you do so all the time (Rule by Decree) and don’t fingure your Paper Shield every time you opponent plays an event while you decide to use it or not.
Deal with people: Their will be a host of characters at the table some will be loud, the odd one will be smoking hot and many will just be distractingly friendly. Do not let these new inputs throw you off your game. Remain focused and play your best.
Wear pants: O and make sure you showered. No one wants to see your new happy face boxers or smell your man funk…..
