Darknoj Game of Thrones LCG Rochester Regional
Once again, I am going to do a quick badly spelled tournament write up so that I can spend time on the post about my deck. To come Wednesday or Thursday of this week. I truly think that the deck I took had a great chance against all the current top deck in the meta.
So my day started at 4:30 am. I woke up showered and went down stairs to find Yubri getting ready to go. We where out of the house by 5:00 and had Sfunk37 in the car by 5:20ish. We had a quick stop at 7:30ish for breakfast but still got to the game center with lots of time to spare before the tournament at 11:10ish. I was a bit tired from driving but over all I felt good. I then made my biggest mistake of the day before the tournament even started. I did not go out and find some food …..
The tournament started a bit late as stragglers showed up but it was fine since it gave us Canadians time to meet all the great guys from Rochester NY. Before I go into my games and my deck I wanted to say that Jimpanda ran a great event. It was well organized and lots of fun. The one thing I think I would suggest he does differently would be to have a break after the cut for 15 min or so. No breaks was tough. After five house pre-cut I think a break was needed. I know I could have used a few minutes for a breather and food that everyone understood as break time.
I ran a GreyJoy Maester Path tempo deck. Do to being super tierd I will get most peoples names wrong so I wont even try.
Round 1 – (1-0) – Baratheon (Agenda: Knights of the Realm, Restricted Card: Val)
I flopped four cards; Alannys, Iron Mines, reducer, boatswain. When I drew back up and got not one but two King Balon's Host I knew the poor bara player was gone have a real hard time winning. Not having renown just slowed his game right down. I got my chains off the agenda and more saves in play then I valed offensively and won the game a few turns later.
Round 2 - (2-0) – Lannister (Agenda: Power Behind the Throne, Restricted Card: Castellan of the Rock)
I was a bit worried about this match up since I knew how fast this version of the PbtT deck that uses epic events could be. Luckly I helped build the deck the day before and so knew that due to a limited card pool their where only four epic battle events in the deck. I got both a Long Ship Iron Victory and a conclave early (I think I am having a hard time remembering this game) which let me win some of the intrigue attacks and so slow down his deck. I continued to build up my board while his continued to shrink soon enough it was over.
At this point I was really starting to feel tired and hungry....
Round 3 – (3-0) – Targaryen ( Agenda: Knight of the Hollow Hill, Restricted Card:?)
This game did not go that well for the Targaryen player. I opened with Retaliation, he played some inf lands but no characters. I got two of my three challenges through since one was blocked by an ambushing dragon. Turn two I played Fear of Winter went first but chose not to play anything. I was worried about some burn coming out at this point and had a cancel in hand I wanted to be able to play. The Targ player also chose not to play anything so all three of my challenges went through. In Dom Westeros Bleeds tried to clean the board but my Finger Dance saved the day. Their was also now enough none character cards in his discard for Alannys to be working...bad news for him. I drew into another Finger Dance and he was basicly shut down with no way to burn out my characters since his burn was all event based. I won a few turns later.
Round 4 – (4 – 0) – Lannister ( Agenda: Power Behind the Throne, Restricted Card: ?)
This was a kneel based deck not an agro one. Lannister kneel is still a very good control archtype if played well and I have to say this was a great game. I cant remember a lot of the game as by this time I was full auto pilot since I was so fatigued / hungry. He bastard all my Maesters which sucked and I can remember commenting at turn six that who ever went first was gone take it down and my opponent agreeing. He then cringed a little as he was forced to play Retaliation, his only other choice being Val and I had a tone of saves on the board.
So I was undefeated and was pumped but needed to find food. Some one told me their was a sub place just around the corner. I went to find out how long was left in this round (15 min) and if we where gone have a break the answer was yes take ten min. So I ran to the sub place and back which I timed and took me 7 min. I was gone set down and eat my sub at the store but I noticed the other top 8 players had all already started their games. The person I was to play came over and introduced him self and seemed ready to get going. I think I could have taken my time and no one would have cared but I felt a little pressured to start the game just because others where already playing. So I stuffed food in my mouth while we played.
Top 8 Game 1 – Baratheon (Agenda: none, Restricted Card: ?)
He floped Mel and I floped boatswain, wintertime marauders and some reducers. I chose to first turn Fear of Winter to try and kill Mel. He played the power of faith, chose to go first and gave Mel an attachment that add +2 strength to her. Know if I wanted to still kill Mel I was gone have to let all of his challenges through but the initial mil. So after turn one he was up 5 power but down a Mel. Next turn he brought Mel back with many powers long sleep and he played a few holy chars plus a knight of the flowers which he duped. I played at the gates to get out a Maester and some saves made it winter and played a few chars. He went first and I blocked most of his attacks and used Wintertime Maradures to discard the dup on KotF so that I could val next turn. Between Mel, KotF and his house card he had close to 9 power already. So next turn I chose val and put it on top of my plot deck to flip.
He looks at his plots for 30 seconds or so and I figet a bit while waiting due to being tired ect...we flip plots and I showed rule by degree and he shows burning bridges, he says “I was sure you where gone val. I wanted to stop the saves”, I was just stunned for a second till I realized that I had figet with my plots while waiting...i had actual moved val to the bottom of my unused plots and played the wrong plot....i would have lost all my board but one char which I could have saved with a Risen from the Sea in the end but with out the reset I had a very slim chance to win this now. I tried holding back his rush as much as I could and at one point I though I was gone be able to hold him off and val next turn but I had done the math wrong...
I am however very happy to say the player who took me out went on to win it all. He was a good player and his deck could rush very well under certain conditions. I hope to see him agin at GenCon this year.
