A Rochester Regional Report - A view from somewhere in the middle of King's Landing

Posted by sfunk37 , 14 June 2012 · 698 views

Last weekend Darknoj, Yburi and myself headed down from Ottawa to participate in a regional event held at Millennium Games in Rochester, New York. The deck I was playing was a Lannister Nobles Power Behind the Throne Rush deck that pretty much won or lost by the end of turn three. The deck was built by Darknoj and I had the chance to playtest it a bit the night before the regional. Games started at noon so my morning started early with the others swinging by to pick me up at around 5:20AM. Yeah, it was going to be a long day. The drive down was rather uneventful, except for our detour to find the McDonald's that should've been on the side of the road, so let's jump right into the report.

Round 1:
My first match was against Chris playing a Lannister Power Behind the Throne deck which was heavy on the gold. My deck did its thing but he managed to hold back his Valar Morghulis (Core) until round four thus causing me to lose my Cersei Lannister (LotR). This almost cost me the game as I had emptied my hand and was top decking for a character. Luckily I managed to pull out a Lannisport Steward (Core) which allowed me to sneak in an intrigue challenge that pushed me out for the win. This match was closer than I would have liked but I managed to pull it out in the end.

Round 2:
My second round and I was already seeing one of three metamates that had driven me down to this event. Since he was driving me back I guess I wouldn't be allowed to crush him completely. I was facing darknoj's Greyjoy Tempo deck this match. Before we began I was confident as this matchup was a favourable one for me by darknoj's own admission; however, good play on his part and bad luck on mine caused this game to go South for me. Having Asha Greyjoy (WLL) on the board and with all the intrigue challenges I was winning I was sure that I would easily get three non-character cards in his discard pile but with seven cards discarded and only two non-characters discarded it was impossible for me to get my renown engine going. Some stupid plays on my part also hurt me including forgetting about Wintertime Marauders (ACoS) and misplaying my epic battles. This was my first loss but I knew Jon would go far in the tournament so I wasn't too worried about my strength of schedule. Since Jon had built my deck he knew that keeping cards out of the discard would help him so he may have very well played to that effect, knowing Asha was on the board.

Round 3:
Round three saw me up against a Bara Knights built piloted by Andy. Before the first round of challenges I had Cersei out with Longclaw (ASitD) on her. Couple that with the fact that he had no intrigue icons on the board and my opening plot was Frey Hospitality (LotR); that meant that I had the upper hand on this match from the get go. I also managed killed three power characters from his deck as the three characters on the board were The Laughing Storm (GotC), Ser Eldon Estermont (MotM) and the Knight of Flowers (SaS). Round two he played Milk of the Poppy (Core) on Cersei but it was too little too late for him as I had Littlefinger (SaS) on the board with Myrcella Lannister (LotR). This game was a lot of fun but I could tell that I had caught my opponent unawares.

Round 4:
Another Baratheon Rush deck this match, with my opponent being the Tournament Organizer Jim. This match saw me have a seven card flop! I'm proud to say that I've never done that before but it really was a sight to behold. Jim didn't expect it either and on turn one I managed to get Cersei with Longclaw on her once again. Round two he tried to Valar but I had The Power of Blood (Core) out so he conceded the match at that point. A seven card flop is really hard to beat.

After round four the three Canadians headed out to the local sub place and had some delicious food. We hurried back in as the cut to top eight had already occurred, matchups had been announced and everyone was already ready to play.

Round 5:
This game saw me rematch Jim from the previous round. Jim knew my deck so the surprise factor of my rush deck wasn't going to work twice. I also didn't managed to pull out a seven card flop this time so that was going to hurt my chances. Jim played excellently and had a strong intrigue prescence that could deny me some of the unopposed power but I think it was one stupid play that cost me this match. I had Cersei and Littlefinger on the board and we were in an epic battle phase I had initiated. I forgot that Cersei triggered on defence and ended up killing Littlefinger due to Frey Hospitality/getting greedy. It was a monumentally stupid play as I could've achieved the same effects that phase/net power gain without killing Littlefinger by simply defending with both characters. Anyways with Melisandre on the board and a ton of renown, the first challenge of round two saw Jim take the game. As a side note, I hate Willas Tyrell (VM). And here I was eliminated in the first round of the cut.

Final thoughts:
I had been debating whether or not coming down for another regional was worth it but I have to say that it definitely was. The local guys were all fantastic players, great sports and extremely welcoming to us Canadians. Driving down with my meta mates was a blast. I also want to give a shoutout to Jim for organizing the tournament and to Millennium Games for hosting. Seriously, I've never seen a nicer game store in my life so if you're ever in Rochester do find some time to check them out.

If you've read my last tourney report you'll remember how I hate the Power Behind the Throne Agenda? Well let me tell you that I'm still not a fan of this agenda but I absolutely love this deck. It's a pure glass cannon but I love that high risk/high reward style gameplay. I had tried to make a similar deck in the last regional but some major changes including Asha out of house, epic battles and Longclaw made all the difference in the world. Not to mention the plot selection. So pretty much the entire deck was different :P. I think this might be the strongest Lannister build around right now but I'm not sure if it'll be strong enough to come out on top in any of the major tournaments. With the new chapter packs favouring Targ I think that this deck will actually remain alright due to some inherent protection against burn (attachments, King's Pavillion (KotStorm)).

Great write-up! I wish i could have gone with you guys, but I'm glad you did well.
Didn't you get screwed with Willas Tyrel? I thought the new cycle aws illegal for regionals this year.
Adam
There definitely is a lot of room for tweaking in this deck specifically in the plots such as to give this deck a viable endgame. As for Willas, FFG has updated the tournament rules to make him legal for upcoming regional events. This happened a few weeks ago so it was totally legit.

Ahhh, I didn't hear about that. He is a nasty card, though.
Thanks again for coming down - it was great to meet you guys. Hopefully we'll meet again soon. Maybe we should consider some kind of big Northeast tournament at some point - we'd be happy to host, I'm sure :)

As for Willas, I was kind of disappointed that the Chapter Pack was legal midway through the season. I wish they would have waited on that.
