AGoT Team Covenant A Game of Thrones Tournament ShadowcatX2000
So tonight I had my second tournament at Team Covenant (major props to Team Covenant for hosting, btw!). Again I played Stark with a focus on House Bolton Siege. In my first blog I mentioned that I was planning on playing Stark Knights tonight, and I was, until two nights ago when a co-worker decided she wanted to try it out and so I let her play my knights and I rebuilt House Bolton as good as I could from what I had left. It worked out alright, we both had fun and she got the door prize, so that was awesome, she was happy. As to my record, I got 2nd place in the melee, and went 1 - 1 in the joust. (Total of 3 - 3 for Joust now. . .)
So melee, my friend and I end up at the same melee table, but she's seated at an angle from me. The other players are a Martell Maester deck and a Lannister Power Behind the Thrones deck. I'm pretty sure I drew dreadfort and abandoned fort either for my setup or my initial hand, either way I had a good (but not great) setup phase, 4 maybe, I think my only character was a Bolton Refugees though. Then I played the plot that allowed me to make two martial challenges. Important note: Even with a decent setup 2 gold plots are bad first turn, m'kay? I do my set up, Martell does his, and then low and behold my friend does hers and manages to have 8 characters on the board after marshaling, including 3 0 drops. Then Lannister uses an event to get an amount of gold equal to the number of characters controlled by an opponent so that wasn't good, but she didn't get any cost reducers out so that helped.
Play proceeds about like you expect, second turn I wildfire because I need martial superiority to run and my friend's army is just disgustingly huge, but the most important thing is that the Lannister player drops Cersei. Play proceeds through that turn as you'd expect. At this point I have 8 power, Lannister has 8 + 2 on Cersei. We're just entering the 3rd plot phase and picking out our plots when they call "finish the phase." So I'm thinking we're done, but lo and behold the Martell Maester player flips a Valar. Unfortunately, knowing her Cersei was vulnerable the Lannister player played a power of the blood (I believe that's it, makes nobles unkillable) so she took first, and I took second.
Moved on to Joust and I wind up against a warship based vanilla Greyjoy deck and from Turn 1 I get dominated, he draws very few characters and tons of locations, I draw tons of characters and no reducers / income increases (well, I might have had 1). After 1st turn I think he's got 3 characters alive to my none. 2nd turn I don't even play a character, building up locations (The Dreadfort and Abandoned Fort). Third turn I wildfire, but he drops Fear of Winter which keeps me from even trying to make a come back. (Here I kind of wonder if I'd had Valar instead of Wildfire if I'd have made a come back, well actually I know I would have, he didn't have any more characters.) It was brutal, I think it was 10 - 0 when they called time.
For the final game I got paired up against a Martell Brotherhood deck. I got perfect draws against him and his draws were pretty bad, but he managed to hold me off real well. Second turn I played the plot to get 2 military challenges but he plays the plot where unless I win an intrigue challenge I can't declare military or power challenges. But I'm Bolton, and I have 8 intrigue strength after marshaling so I can push my challenge through, and when I do he drops a Martell event to take all my icons away, my beautiful 2 military challenge turn is lost! Still, I have an army out and we end up at like 9 - 6 when time is called. Highlight of the game was getting to discard 2 red vengeance cards out of the Martell player's hand thanks to intrigue challenges. (Yup, Stark beating Martell at intrigue.)
So I improved this time around, I made sure to go get my Dreadfort first turn every game if I didn't have it in hand. I'm still in shock at how good some of the greyjoy cards are, a warship that exponentially increases the power on your side of the table, what can you do against that if you don't have location control? (To be fair, I had location control, but it was a fear of winter turn so my location control didn't matter.) I have still not had the Bolton whips (whatever they're called) kill a single character for me. Ditto the abandoned fort (perhaps I'm too fearful in how I use my Boltons). Haven't had ghost Arya do me any good at all. I did finally get use out of Meera, and she was a big part of me holding back Greyjoy for as long as I did. I kind of feel like I should probably include more dupes for my uniques and run Valar, and maybe run a bit more control. I never did get to get Harrenhal into play though.
