AGoT Team Covenant A Game of Thrones Tournament Report ShadowcatX2000
Well, its been a while since I did one of these and I kinda got out of the habit (blame my trip to Alaska, not me) but I want to get back in the saddle so I'm going to start with last night's tournament. I took a Martell Quentyn deck for Melee and a Targaryen KotHH burn for melee, but made a game time decision to stick with the Martell. The tournament consisted of 1 melee event followed by 2 rounds of joust.
My melee match up saw me sitting with another Martell deck featuring summer and armies, and two Baratheon decks, one a power rush and the other an Asshai holy deck. The order at the table is the power rush, then the Asshai, then myself, then the other Martell. (This will be important later. The Martell player is Ben (or Benjamin, not sure which he goes by), and I believe the Asshai player was Matt. I unfortunately don't recall the name of the power rush player.) The Martell and the Asshai deck were played by veterans, and the Asshai deck had defeated me in Melee last week so I was looking for vengeance. I got a decent set up, but nothing spectacular, but my first plot really helped me out, I dropped Good for the Gander (Core), and the Baratheon power rush dropped a Summoning Season (Core), so I made a pact with him and we both got to search for 2 characters. I, of course got Quentyn as one of mine, but with the other I picked up Myrcella Lannister and her ability would come in handy, though it wasn't a huge deal. More importantly for me I had two Underhanded Assassin (TWoW) after marshalling allowing me to collect some quick power through unopposed checks. I don't recall the exact blow by blow, but the power rush deck, after collecting half a dozen power in a single challenge got hammered.
Going into the second turn the Asshai deck drops Melisandre (Core) and dupes her. I know that I have no ability to win while she's out, since my deck relies heavily on renown. But I have a plan. I start holding characters. Luckily for me I'm drawing a ton of reducers and characters so I'm doing alright. One important event that I'm holding, however, is Blood for Blood (PotS), that's my ticket for killing the duped Melisandre so I make a deal with the person going after me to give him an unopposed military challenge if he'll withhold intrigue challenging me. He does, and I kill off my Lost Spearman (MotM) that has been augmented by a
He Calls It Thinking (PotS) and a Fanatic (RoR) that I managed to steal with my plot (whose name I've forgotten, it enabled me to take locations / attachments that I reveal with intrigue challenges) and using the blood for blood off Melisandre. This leaves me with only two characters facing down a mighty host from both the Asshai player and the other Martell player. But not to fret, I have Valar Morghulis (Core).
I play said plot and for some reason it manages to take both experienced players by surprise. The Martell player is able to save a couple renown armies, but the Asshai player looses everything and wastes a The Power of Faith (KotStorm) turn, much to my delight. Thanks to my massive number of reducers, I quickly assemble a force of maybe like 5 guys, with like 3 of them having renown and being unique. (I've gotten Quentyn dead by this point.) I'm able to get a couple more challenges and get some renown until I'm sitting at like 7 or 8 power. Nothing really extraordinary happens though.
We're pressed for time and we all know it so we're rushing and so I use To the Spears! (PotS) as my last plot. The Asshai player uses Many Powers Long Asleep (RoR) to return Mel, which will basically ensure no one wins this turn, if she sticks around. It will also ensure he gets second (after the other Martell player) and I get third. I just can't let that happen. And this is where the use of titles may be the most important, I grab the title that allows for a redirect. The power rush player, who has been drawing horribly all night and has served as the punching bag to three armies does nothing, as does the Asshai. And I have my big turn, going up to 16 power, though unfortunately for me, the majority of it is on renown. Fortunately for me though, I'm able to whittle the Asshai player down to one character left standing, a lone Mellisandre.
The last remaining Martell player has 12 renown at this point and declares a military challenge on the power rush deck and I redirect it. He tells me not to worry about Mellisandre, he'll take care of her, (his plot is Fury of the Sun) but I have no intention of letting him get to 15+ power before she is dealt with. Well, he chooses me as his opponent for the military challenge and I oppose it, but I loose. As I pick up my two claim, neither of which have renown and he counts out his 13th and 14th point of power, I play my second copy of blood for blood, killing off Mellisandre and taking the game.
My first joust game sees me up against a Stark siege deck that is absolutely vicious. I quickly get a The Red Viper (PotS) out, with just enough peons to keep him alive through claim. We stay relatively even on power for most of the game, unfortunately half my power (literally) is on The Red Viper, while his is safely tucked away behind a wall of 8 characters. I know if I can just find a dupe for big Red, I can valar and potentially win in a turn, but it never happens and the game ends somewhere around the 5th turn with me at only 10 power. Props to Alex on the great win.
My second joust game is a route, the guy is pissed at his deck, pissed at the game, and doesn't even try. Literally doesn't even play anything the second or third turn, just marshals gold and passes. Sorry you had a bad night Zero.
And that was my tournament, I tied for third place, and Alex, my only loss, took second, so I really can't complain. Alex and I played a bit after the tournament, and that game went more my way, though we had to pack it up half way through, and who can say who would've won. I'd kept him off the overwhelming numbers of characters he'd gotten against me the previous game, but he got bear island up and running and was slowly eating away at my renown / no attachment having forces.
