Kingsmoot in the East 2012 Tournament Report

Posted by kpmccoy21 , 29 April 2012 · 207 views

It had been awhile since I had played competitive Thrones, and I really wondered whether it was worth showing up to this event. With the local meta in hibernation from AGOT and my ability to even meet up with them a seeming rarity recently, I knew my decks and play would be rusty at best. But, I hadn't seen Stann...I mean Staglord, Anthony, Dan, Greyjoy Chris, LetsGoRed, and the rest of the greater NYC meta in a long time, so I figured I should make the trek at least for social reasons. I'm really glad I made the trek, even if my analysis o fmy decks and play skill were dead on.

A little background about my deck before I start the real TR. It was originally a Baratheon/Heir to the Iron Throne deck before the errata to the agenda and the introduction of the Restricted List. The Goal was to make as many Power challenges as quickly as possible. I included mostly standing tech, epic battles, renown, power claiming events.Typical Baratheon/Rush. After the removal of The Laughing Storm from the Restricted List, I thought I'd try it out again. Unfortunately, I figured I'd see a lot of Greyjoy/Choke since the East Coast seems to love heavy control. Never saw one all day. My guess on the deck breakdown at Kingsmoot going in was Martell, either Summer, Maester, or KotHH would be the predominant House, with Greyjoy Winter or Maesters the next largest group. Next would be Stark or Targ, with a smattering of Lannister and Baratheon. So I replaced my power claiming events with Location Control. Whoops. It cost me at least 2 games, possibly 3. On to the actual event.

Round 1-Rich(Mekros41)-Greyjoy/None. Rich was one of the TO's and a very friendly guy. I think he was running a Mill deck, but it never really got going. I was able to win plot 4 or 5. I was able to play Rich casually afterwards and he got his revenge against me. 1-0

Round 2-Corey(Baragwin)-Martell/Maesters.He got a better flop and had control from the beginning. Bad matchup, great opponent, not much to say. Corey is a good guy and I always enjoy my games with him. I think he had over 10 chains on his house. Wow! 1-1

Round 3-Jim(Orange Dragon)-Martell/KotHH-Really tight game. I was able to steal one of his Fiefdoms and got within a couple power of winning, The Shadow army(Southron Mercenaries?) killed me in the end. He played it well and earned the win. First game I really missed my power claiming events. 1-2

Round4-J.R.-Greyjoy/Summer-Second tight game. I got all my income and some of his, but was unable to draw into the characters I needed. Got to 13 or 14 power but couldn't quite pull it off. Second game I wish i had Superior Claim or Make an Example. 1-3

Round 5- Kyle(Wolfgangsenff)-Martell/Summer. Kyle is one of the few players left on the East Coast who began playing before me. We reminisced back to the days of $70 Kings Halls and how the first rotation killed a lot of metas on the East Coast(something to think about all you proponents of set rotation for the LCG). Despite many conversations on the boards, this was my first time meeting him. Kyle was running the new, improved version of the deck I piloted at GenCon, so I knew exactly what I was facing. Oddly enough he didn't see Ghaston Grey til plot 5 and Sallador took care of it before he could bounce any of my characters. It was Ellaria, Arianne, and all the other shenanigans that won him the game. He played it well and earned the win. Another game I wish I had had my power claiming events. 1-4

2 of my last 4 opponents made the cut, and all 4 could have made the cut. StagLord's Bara/Knights Rush deck made the cut. TLS/Val was nice, but didn't really do anything but allow me to sustain the game past Plot 3. Overall, it was a lot of fun seeing old friends and making new ones. Now to figure out my deck for the New Jersey Regional....
