Tourney Report - Joust in Hockley, UK

Posted by CobraBubbles , 22 July 2013 · 38805 views

Tourney Report - Joust in Hockley, UK "They turned their backs on their rightful king for no better reason than dreams of power and glory, and I have marked them for what they are. Pardoned them, yes. Forgiven. But not forgotten." - Stannis Baratheon

"This is Stannis Baratheon. The man will fight to the bitter end and then some." - Tywin Lannister

"There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man." - Varys, also on Stannis

But which Stannis are we talking about here? The title says this is a Joust Tournament report, so it must be Stannis Baratheon (VM), I hear you say. He's best in Joust, right? Or perhaps this Cobra chap is attempting to counter the dominance of The Long Voyage with Stannis Baratheon (KotStorm)? Wrong on both counts - the Stannis I speak of is Stannis Baratheon (Core), who I like to think of as the leader of the Black Sailed fleet that I piloted at the Hockley Regional on Sunday last. Using him successfully is great fun; simply declare him as an attacker and watch your opponent's Lord-less forces cower as you Naval in your unstoppable fleet of Smugglers, and then get to trigger loads of fun effects off of winning the challenge. But, you might say, how is one to amass such a fleet in the first place?

"Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha!" - I laugh at the question, and so does The Laughing Storm (GotC). As I'm sure many of you know, Mr Storm creates a draw-capping machine of a combo with Stannis' hostage from beyond the wall, Val (RotO). With the search granted by Black Sails (RotK) and Naval Reinforcements (RotK) I can go fetch this unlikely couple and get them working by turn two, or turn one with lucky draw.

In many ways, Baratheon is the house of rush - in this case two different kinds of rush. First a rush for card advantage with the Val-Storm and agenda search, and then a rush for power when the necessary forces are assembled. In my version of this deck, the key members of these forces included Stannis himself, Ser Eldon Estermont (MotM), Melisandre (RotO), Robert Baratheon (Core) and Margaery Tyrell (AToTT) (aka Fat Bob and Uber-Marge). Throw in a little bit of recursion tech, all of Baratheon's available Naval enhanced characters and some fun Naval related effects and that's the deck. Oh, and I also added Motley (Core) and Nightmares (LoW) 2x each, and they both proved invaluable later on.

Now for the Tournament itself. Incidentally, this is my first Tourney report, so I hope it works out ok. I have quite a tendency to ramble - I picked it up back in '98 when the circus came to town, and I- Oh. I'm doing it again aren't I? I'll shut up now :)

Attendance at Hockley's Tabletop Nation was to the tune of 15. I don't have complete House and Agenda records and I didn't get everyone's names, but here's what I remember:
  • Me (Rowan), playing Bara Black Sails
  • Andy (our TO), playing Stark Brotherhood
  • James (Milne), playing Martell Brotherhood
  • James (Waumsley, a.k.a. J C Wamma of the excellent Rise of the Kraken column), playing Lanni No Agenda Aggro/Control with Ser Kevan Lannister (VM)
  • Tagore, playing a more control-oriented Lanni No Agenda build, also with Kevan
  • Michael (Heynes), playing Lanni TLV control
  • Michael (Clark), playing Martell No Agenda with Quentyn
  • Tom, playing Martell TLV
  • Craven, playing Bara Knights of the Realm
  • One Stark Siege
  • One Bara Asshai, with HoD The Stormlands (KotStorm) (I think)
  • One Lanni Clansmen (don't think he had an agenda, but I'm not certain)
  • One Greyjoy TLV Choke
  • One Bara Night's Watch/Wildlings (not sure which but he had 3 agendas)
  • And one more whose deck I never saw
So that's 4 Bara, 4 Lanni, 3 Martell, 2 Stark, 1 Greyjoy, 1 Unknown and NO Targaryen! Strange, huh? We played 5 rounds of Swiss, then cut to a Top 8.

Round 1: vs Andy (Stark Brotherhood)
I had only built my deck about 5 days before the regional, and in playtesting it had delivered mixed results, so I was a little nervous going into the first round. Happily, I got possibly the luckiest draw I've ever had in any Thrones match. If memory serves, I had the Val-Storm on Setup with resources, plus Stannis, Eldon and some Naval dudes out within a couple of turns. The luck came primarily in the form of dupes for all my key guys, which meant very few casualties, despite Andy getting the beast that is Lem Lemoncloak (MotM) out early. I got an early lead in card advantage and board position, but then Beric turned up and Andy gave him a Tourney Lance (TftH) and a Lordship (Core) to stop Stannis. Lord Dondarrion looked like he might have single-handedly turned things around, despite being made Motley. Thankfully, I drew into a Nightmares and played it on Beric pre-plot the following round, but Andy saw what was coming and decided to take me down with him, matching my subsequent Valar with his own. What I'd planned to be a one-sided reset turned into only Val and Stannis left standing thanks to dupes, but it was enough and without Beric Andy was unable to prevent my eventual win. Very tense, very fun - just as Thrones should be!

Score: 1 - 0

As far as I saw, the only reason Andy was running his Brotherhood deck out of Stark was for a nice combo with Isle of Faces (APS) and The Minstrel's Muse (RotO), which really sped things up in some of his other games, but I managed to blow up the Isle with Salladhor Saan (TPoL) pretty early to keep his rush under control. More lucky draw!

Round 2: vs Tagore (Lanni No Agenda Control)
As anyone else who's played Bara Black Sails will probably know, it suffers against Lanni Control. Unlike many Baratheon decks, it's not fast enough to try rushing for the win before the lockdown begins. Unfortunately for me, there were three guys running Lanni control at Hockley, all of whom I knew to be excellent pilots. I only played one of them - Tagore - but I played him twice, and as such the two games have bled into each other somewhat in my memory. All I remember of this match was that The Laughing Storm wasn't in my Hold, and so despite getting Val out and duped early I couldn't get the card advantage going. Having Mel and some Naval support on the board early as well looked promising but it just resulted on a 2nd turn valar from Tagore followed by a Terminal Schemes (LotR) to finish off the saved Val, and it was all downhill from there.

Score: 1 - 1

Round 3: vs Tom (Martell TLV)
This game was really fun. Both our decks worked around getting a lot of cards and then flooding the board with characters, and we both managed to pull it off quite well. A few turns in I had the Val-Storm, Eldon with some power, Ser Davos Seaworth (TGF), a couple of fleets and some Naval chuds out, and had played Battle for the Shield Islands (TGF) pre-plot. Tom had The Windblown (AHM), a non-kneeling The Red Viper (PotS) with some power, a Hellholt Engineer (CbtC) with a Taste for Blood (PotS) which had given him about 7 power (rendering Eldon pretty useless), and a bunch of smaller guys. I think the sheer volume of characters, plus a Shores of the Mander (AJE), messed with both our challenge math - he went first, pushed through the Intrigue and Power challenges, then passed when I thought he could have also managed a potentially devastating Military hit. By the end of the phase I had 14 power and he had 12-odd, and Davos' ability won it for me on Dominance. Quite a thrilling race to the finish over the last couple of rounds, especially given we finished with less than 10 minutes of time remaining.

Score: 2 - 1

Round 4: vs Michael (Martell No Agenda)
I met Michael a week before the tournament at the monthly DarkSphere meetup, to which we brought a Tully deck and a Dragons deck each, leading to some highly entertaining mirror matches. He's a really fun guy to play with and makes very few mistakes. Unfortunately for him, he never got Quentyn out in this game, and his draw suffered - his hand was totally empty post-marshalling for the last few rounds. This led to a couple of pointless Intrigue challenges on my part which he would just defend with a Maester of the Sun (ASoS) to prevent me getting through unopposed, before standing his Maester for Vengeful and reminding me he had no hand, meaning that I had gained literally nothing from kneeling out some guys. D'oh! Alongside two of the aforementioned Maesters repeatedly saving his guys, his greatest asset was a Harmen Uller (PotS) who ended up with two He Calls It Thinking (PotS) attached. Despite the fact that Michael never had a big enough hand to turn Harmen on (fnar fnar), he had about 7 Renown power on him by the late game, mostly from his To the Spears! (PotS) turn. One of those He calls it Thinkings allowed him to kill Fat Bob with Areo Hotah (PotS) by cancelling my duping him with Black Betha (TGF) in an exciting exchange of responses. A round later, with only a few power needed to win, I went for the power challenge with Eldon. He defended all out and I Navalled in all my eligible guys, taking the STR total to a tense 19-19 thanks to Shores of the Mander x2 on my side before we realised that he should only have been able to defend with Harmen due to the power on Eldon.

Score: 3 - 1

Round 5: vs Craven (Bara Knights)
Craven and I were both running rush decks, but of different types, and the difference really showed here. As mentioned above, my deck rushes in two stages, making it slower but harder to stop once it gets going due to card advantage. Craven's was an all-out rush deck, which he told me would hardly ever win if the game lasted longer than three rounds. I had pretty poor draw, and the Storm being absent from my hold meant that my deck just didn't get going in time. Craven's key pieces were a Fat Bob and Eldon of his own, plus Ser Guyard Morrigen (KotStorm) and Ser Parmen Crane (KotStorm), each with a Banner Bearer (THoBaW) to share Bob's Stealth and Renown around. I valared 3rd turn despite his dupe on Crane but forgot about Crane's ability which allowed him to save Bob and Power challenge for the game. Hats off to Craven - when his deck works, it really works!

Final Score: 3 - 2
Which put me 4th in the swiss, behind all three of the Lanni control guys! That's what happens when there's no Targ burn around, I guess. I actually think I should have come 5th, as James 'Martellhood' Milne had 3 wins, 1 loss and 1 modified win, but I'm happy with my performance nonetheless. The other 3 to make the cut were Andy and the gentlemen playing Clansmen and Greyjoy Choke. As the Top 8 draw was read out I felt a bit like Harry Potter under the sorting hat, muttering "Not Lannister, not Lannister, anything but Lannister" under my breath. Those of you that have been paying attention will have worked out that I did not get my wish, however...

Top 8: vs Tagore again
As I said, my memories of my matches with Tagore are a bit blurred (the fact that we played at the same table both times didn't help!), so apologies for the lack of detail. I got Uber-Marge with some saves out early, but was never really able to use her ability as the dastardly Lannisters kept her knelt for most of the game. Val getting Enslaved (THoBaW) first turn messed me up pretty bad, and I had resigned myself to a slow defeat. On the 3rd or 4th turn I got Battle for the Shield Islands out and managed to get a Fleet from Lys (RotK) down despite it costing the full 7. Needless to say it was knelt almost instantly, but I thought I had a good chance of pulling off the epic phase challenge and stealing one of Tagore's nasty kneeling locations. Unfortunately Tagore marshalled a second House Clegane Brigands (AToTT), allowing him to play A House Divided (WLL) on my Lyseni Army to prevent the potential turnaround. Very well played by him and a deserved win shortly afterwards.

In the other Top 8 matches the other Lanni controllers knocked out Andy and the Clansmen, and Mr Greyjoy closed down Martellhood Milne in another long game (their match in the swiss had been James' modified win). In the Top 4, despite his unbeaten run up to that point, Waumsley's Aggro control was beaten by Heynes' Long Voyage control and Tagore escaped the choke that did for James to set up a Lanni control mirror match final. As you might expect, it was a really, really slow game, with both sides hovering around 6 power for the first 7-8 rounds. Eventually Tagore pulled ahead in the 10th/11th to take home the trophy.

Props and Slops
  • Props to Andy for being a great TO and to Weyland Games for hosting a really fun event;
  • Many props to Tagore for his first regional victory, for generously giving up his enamel Greyjoy House Card to the Greyjoy player (he came 2nd in the London regional so he already had one), and for lending me his 'begginner box' over the past few months. It contains almost the entirety of the King's Landing and Defenders of the North cycles and really helped me get into the game;
  • Props to my friend Darren for convincing me to take the Black Sails deck rather than an underwhelming Tully/Siege/Winter build I'd been working on;
  • Props to my buddy James 'Martellhood' Milne for making the cut in his first ever regional and for taking a deck which goes so well with his name;
  • Slops to me for thoughtlessly interrupting Milne and Andy's 5th round game with advice, leading to some complicated sportsmanship rulings. In the end it didn't really affect the result of the game, but I apologise again anyway - sorry guys!
  • Props to Milne and Andy for both playing Brotherhood so that the epic Beric-off that was that match could happen! 14 power on each Beric in the last round really was something to behold.
And... that's about it. Unfortunately, Stannis' powerful fleet couldn't sit him on the Iron Throne, but hey, no-one really expects him to manage it anyway, right? Hope you enjoyed the report :) I'll stop rambling now.
