The End of the Line - When Games Die

Posted by LordTeacup , 27 November 2013 · 4462 views

Warhammer Invasion LCG
Today we heard the news that the Warhammer Invasion LCG has come to an abrupt end. No more expansions, no more support. To paraphrase Jim Morrison, this my friend, is the end.

I've seen a lot of games fall by the way-side. Some go to ground fairly well and before ideas run out. Games like World of Warcraft, Doomtrooper, Middle Earth, Babylon 5 and I think that Warhammer can be counted amongst these. Some stretch out their lives for far to long and become sad reflections of what they used to be like Vampire, Rage, Star Wars (CCG), and finally some go screaming and kicking in a torturous fire of publishing and fanboy mayhem, Raw Deal and Purge spring to mind.

Of course we have the Leviathans, Magic The Gathering, Yugioh and Pokemon but an LCG is highly unlikely to ever have the lifespan or market share of these games due to the fact that the games are constantly re-designed and re-booted to ensure a steady flow of capital. They also have appeal to the type of player who isn't overly concerned with a level playing field. I'm not criticsing this preference merely mentioning it as a point of fact.

Losing an LCG is new though. It reinforces that the lifespan is very finite and that at the end of the day business is business. WI has to be one of the weakest performing games for FFG and I suspect that LOTR and CoC are struggling against the big guys Game of Thrones and now Netrunner. Star Wars is a trcky one. In the UK there seems to be a sense of apathy about the game at the moment.

Warhammer Invasion at least has a feel of 'completeness' about it now. FFG did the right thing and gave players what they have wanted for a long time and used it to close the door softly rather than with a slam. How many of our beloved TV shows have been cancelled before the plot is finally concluded? At least here we have a strong history of cards, multiplayer options and of course the missing piece, the neutrals.

I don't like to see things that I enjoy end but sadly it is something that we have to accept. It also means that the FFG LCG stable may well have room for a NEW project. I think many of us are hoping that the Vampire game I mentioned earlier could see its way onto the FFG design table, and for myself losing WI would an OK price to pay.

For now I'll raise a glass to the first of the LCG's to gracefully bow out.

So long Dark Elves, we will annihilate somones hand in the future no doubt, but not today, not today.

I think tales of LOTR's death are greatly exagerrated - it's by far the most popular LCG among "casual" LCG players/board gamers, and has been mentioned as one of FFG's top sellers. It just doesn't have the high profile of the other LCGs.
I don't think that either LOTR or C0C are tabled for euthenasia just yet but I also suspect that an exit strategy is being drawn up. FFG are fairly ruthless with their products.

Think UFS and more recently Wings of War.

Wings of War was never theirs to begin with - I think they were just the American distributor. The company that made it (Nexus Game) went bust, and that took down the Wings of War range.
Wings was passed on to another company. Its still going. FFG own the license to the mechanic.

I think a 40k LCG is on it's way and will be here by this time next year.
Interesting.

Wings was owned by Nexus, then passed on to Ares games by the designers. Similar thing to War of the Ring.
I, for one, welcome the idea of a collectible game that at one point reaches completion ;)
I own a significant portion of Warhammer Invasion product lineup, as well as most of what's released so far for Netrunner. For both games I don't get to play very often, but I still purchase most of the products and releases.

FFG, if you are listening, it would be very similar for me with W40K LCG, and for Vampire redesign I would buy everything immediately as it comes out.
I believe there are many other players/customers who feel the same way. Just make those happen, and you can have as much of my money as you ask for.
