Yes. But not constantly enough against good Elite deck with a top Player. Maybe a build with 3 x exterminatus and 3 x calculated strike can handle Elite Decks but I am not sure.

Challenge. Start from scratch. Assume nothing about what a deck should look like. How would you build for the current meta?

Something like this is not that bad:

Warlord
1x Captain Cato Sicarius

Armies
4x Sicarius's Chosen
3x Void Pirate
3x Rogue Trader
3x Firedrake Terminators
1x Techmarine Aspirant
3x Deathwing Terminators
1x Land Raider
2x Sword Brethren Dreadnought
1x Vostroyan Officer
3x Sanctioned Psyker
3x Standard Bearer

Attachments
1x Tallassarian Tempest Blade
1x Iron Halo
3x Promotion

Events
2x The Fury of Sicarius
3x Indomitable
1x Exterminatus
3x crushing blow
3x Backlash

Supports
1x Cato's Stronghold
3x Clearcut Refuge
3x STC Fragment

You have big units to challenge big units. Of course fury to manage the unmanageable big units;P

Clearcut to have a big units bigger or to deal with some swarm => firedrake.

2 guys to help elites (vostroyan and aspirant)

And Standard bearer to have your elites hit faster;P

Here's my version of midrange fun:

Army (27)
3x 10th Company Scout (Core Set)
3x Blood Angels Veterans (Core Set)
1x Dark Angels Vindicator
2x Honored Librarian (Core Set)
2x Imperial Fists Devastators (Deadly Salvage)
3x Imperial Fists Siege Force (The Threat Beyond)
3x Rogue Trader (Core Set)
3x Salamander Flamer Squad (Slash and Burn)
4x Sicarius's Chosen (Core Set)
3x Void Pirate (Core Set)

Attachment (4)
3x Iron Halo (Core Set)
1x Tallassarian Tempest Blade (Core Set)

Event (15)
3x Calculated Strike (Core Set)
3x Drop Pod Assault (Core Set)
1x Exterminatus (Core Set)
3x Indomitable (Core Set)
2x The Fury of Sicarius (Core Set)
3x Vengeance! (The Great Devourer)

Support (4)
1x Cato's Stronghold (Core Set)
3x Crypt of Saint Camila (The Final Gambit)

Deck is teched to take on elites and I have faced some midrange to good success in my limited testing (it's 4-0)with plays versus Vezuel, Kugath, Shadowsun and Ragnar.

I dropped promotion in favor calculated strike, which can target promotion if needed, dropped Primal Howl for Iron Halo, and dropped crushing blow because of the greater prevalence of high HP decks out there. Vengeance offers a counterpoint to Cato's Stronghold and also juices up the flamer squad's ability.

Cato's resource generation can pull off games where Crypt isn't pulled early (or you are facing Ork allies and cannot deploy stall enough to stave off Squig Bombin threat. With Crypt out on the board and Cato's resource generation I find I have enough to get out my army threats with money in hand for tricks. Crypt is unique but is not limited. If it's destroyed it does suck but given that it's full cost up to 4 you typically can break even (though yeah, you are out a card if destroyed).

Librarian is there just to have some good level of hit probability with DPA. Were I to drop DPA I would drop librarians also. I dropped the Cardinis due to space and the fact that flamer squad can serve for swarm control. I like flamer squad over Daring Assault team because they have more HP. I recommend trying them before judging them.

I'm testing the vindicator. Not sure if I will bump up to 2 or remove completely.

Not much else to say about the deck. Rest is pretty standard.

I have been running 3x Exterminatus and not looking back.  Nobody expects you to have more than 1.  It is pure value against Elite decks and gives you an answer to Khymera Den by luring the dogs onto one planet to try and murder your Warlord (or win a key battle).

That said, I am really torn on the numbers of other cards.  I feel that 3x Indomitable and 3x Drop Pod Assault is just flat-out ubiquitous.

Yesterday a friend suggested to me that I should drop the mobile Trailblazer and focus on better tools for warlord hunting.  this was mostly in deference to playing against Packmaster Kith decks.

Part of me wants to fit in a third Veteran Brother Maxos so that I have the maximum "surprises" in combat with Eager Recruits and Drop Pods.  The idea is against Elites, win command struggles and slow play until you get Fury and/or Exterminatus.  Against command-heavy decks like Kith, AM and Tau, hunt their warlord and try to power draw through your good events, using Cato's resources to fuel Maxos, DPA and Eager Recruits to really punish their warlords ASAP.

My current build at the moment is thus:

Army (28)
3x Earth Caste Technician

3x Eager Recruit
3x Rogue Trader

3x Tactical Squad Cardinius
3x Void Pirate
3x Blood Angels Veterans
3x Honored Librarian

2x Veteran Brother Maxos
4x Sicarius's Chosen
1x Imperial Fists Devastators

Attachment (7)
3x Ion Rifle

3x Promotion
1x Tallassarian Tempest Blade

Event (14)
3x Primal Howl

3x Indomitable

3x Drop Pod Assault
3x Exterminatus
2x The Fury of Sicarius

Support (1)
1x Cato's Stronghold

If you are looking for WL kill via Veteran Brother Maxos, then I'd suggest taking out Rogue Trader (since Cato can supply plenty of resources on his own) with 10th Company Scouts.  They can act both as capper and combat units.  I also think finding room for White Scars Bikers is a good idea since they can hit WL for 5 with help from VBM.

This illustrates one of the issues I have with Cato lately.  People say "Cato doesn't need Rogue Traders because he makes enough money."  And I get that he helps make resources, but his units also cost a lot.  Then there's the events I'm running.  Drop Pod Assault and Exterminatus aren't cheap.

I do like the suggestion of White Scars Bikers but I'm jsut not sure what/where to cut things to fit them.

And should I fit a 3rd Veteran Brother Maxos?

Thanks for responding.

Unless you are playing with Ambush Platform I really don't see the need for ion rifles but that's just me.  You can swap them for +1 Vet Brother Maxos (if your deck centers around that unit), +1 White Scars Bikers (or go 2 and 2 with Bikers and Librarian), and +1 Devastators. I'd take out 1 Exterminatus as well.

Challenge. Start from scratch. Assume nothing about what a deck should look like. How would you build for the current meta?

This is what I would run if I brought midrange to a tournament today. 1st draft and not tested, but it has everything you need.

Units
4x Chosen
3x BAV
3X Librarian
2x Imperial Fist Devastators
2x Standard Bearer
3x Eager Recruit
3x Void Pirate
3x Ratling Deadeye
3x 10th Co Scout
3x Sanctioned Psyker

Attachments
1x Tempest Blade
2x Jump Pack

Events
2x Fury
2x Crushing Blow
3x Indomitable
3x Suppressive Fire
2x Exterminated
3x Primal Howl

Supports
1x Stronghold
2x Catachan Outpost

Overwhelm the Elites with Swarm. I'd love to fit a 3rd Standard Bearer to increase the volume of attacks, but I think the deck is too tight for that. I could see Crushing Blow as being another important card as limiting the volume of enemy attacks is important here.

Jump Pack is primarily here because Drop Pod is weak in this deck. Use it against flying elites or to keep units alive against midrange or swarm. I imagine it pairing well with Fury to take down Helldrakes much easier.

Suppressive Fire is most of the reason that I allied AM. It will help to draw out Backlash to make Chosen less risky to use. And with Indomitable and Crushing Blow, you should be able to severely cut down on incoming attacks.

Ion Rifles are a target for Earth Caste.  It's essentially a free card.  The Ion Rifle is effectively copies 2-4 of Cato's Blade (doing +3 attack is virtually the same as an Armorbane attack).  It's a free shield attached to a 1/1 Command Icon unit.  It increases spike damage against Elites.  It makes people target whatever unit has the rifle.  I think it's a pretty strong card.

Why would you remove 1x Exterminatus?  It and Fury of Sicarius are the two cards I want to see in my hand against Elite decks every time.  Even if you use it to 1-for-1 an Elite, you've dealt with 5+ of their resources with 3 of yours.  I find it to be one of the top 5 Space Marines cards in the game right now.

I actually removed all of the Rogue Traders to make room for the second Devastators and then 2x Imperial FIsts Siege Force which I feel is a better tempo play against command decks.

...

I played a close version to this in the Winter 2017 BCL and made it into the Top 16. I've played it on other occasions also.  Its a very strong deck against elite decks in addition to midrange and swarm.  The biggest weakness is against strong command decks like Kith standard (it is very strong versus Eldorath vehicles).  I also had a very troubling match versus Vezuel where I couldn't overcome the Garrison command so not sure how well it stacks up versus other Space Marine decks where Tactical Strike is a dead card (many people don't like Tactical Strike anyway so see below for options I see for swapping out).

The updated deck along with full league report and a video of its game play in the league is here: http://www.traxissec...ck=304&public=y

You could swap the balance away from strong versus cost reducer and elite decks to more balance on command by dropping the 3 tactical strikes for promotion and perhaps the Siege Force for Trailblazer (though this also reduces your DPA and Vengeance hit rate).  Or not go full swing and drop the 3 tactical strikes and replace with 2 Primal Howl and 1 more Exterminatus. The current 1x Ravenwing Escort is a test slot that I've rotated Barbrus, Maxos and Vindicators through.  None have fit to my liking and I may just go 3x Devastators (which don't trigger when put into play through Crypt but are strong in their stats and in many games I'll deploy those and just use Crypt to put into play a Chosen).

It was through Crypt that I learned how incredibly awesome the Flamer Squad is.
