Can I use this guy, to prevent Gollum dealing damage to Bilbo in the "Dungeons Deep and Caverns Dim" quest, even though both Gollum and Bilbo are immune to player card effects?

(It feels like it should follow from the the Dori/Beorn FAQ ruling, but I am not certain).

As stupid as it is, I think you can use the Honour Guard this way seeing that he targets the damage and not the character himself (unless there is an example where this was ruled out, someone should help).

I think they never thought of that kind of interaction when they were writing the rulesheet for that quest:

Cards in the riddle area (including Bilbo Baggins) are
immune to player card effects and cannot leave the riddle
area except through specific quest card effects. While
Gollum is in the riddle area, he does not contribute his
threat during the quest phase and cannot be engaged by
the players. While Bilbo Baggins is in the riddle area, the
first player still controls him; however, he cannot quest,
attack, take damage from cards other than Gollum, have
attachments played on him by the players, or defend
(except against Gollum).

There is nothing in the above text that prevents the damage on Bilbo to be manipulated by the players. The question now is whether "to a character" counts as targeting.

I think thats right. Although this wording is strange, there is another wording e.g. in the "Foundations of Stone" scenario, saying players are not allowed to "interact" with each other. Then Honour guard would not trigger. I'm not sure if there are also cards that say they are not allowed to interact with each other, but if there are (or will come in the future), those would not be allowed to trigger the response of the guard ("interact" beeing stronger than "immune to player effects")

Thanks Valdemart and Palpa. I think it was a half-recollection of the no-interaction setups that had me feeling icky about it, whereas I am usually more confident about these things.
