Coupled with his pipe and staff, Mithrandir is arguably the most powerful hero to date. Resource generation, card draw, shadow card mitigation, attack, defend, quest, soak up damage....AND you can put any 'printed resource' restricted attachments/events on him. I have yet to build a deck with him that doesn't dominate. Put him with Elrond and Glorfindel and the game is too easy.
If you play an attachment or event that has the "play only if all heroes have a printed (Lore sphere, for example) icon" with Gandalf, who is coupled with 2 other heroes with a printed Lore sphere icon (for example), can you still play that card with Gandalf's ability?
Only if you are playing it from the top of your deck, since Gandalf's ability says he is considered to have the "printed" icons when doing it that way
OK, that's what I thought...
Thanks for a fast answer, sir!
Cheers
Can you use Gandalf's resources to pay for neutral characters out of hand?
The card is listed as "neutral" sphere, so I do.
Yes you can. He can pay for his toys
This is how I understand it: Neutral isn't a sphere. So cards which demand your hero to be in any sphere don't work here. To pay for neutral cards, your hero doesn't have to be in any sphere. Baggins and Fellowship sphere can also pay for neutral cards.
I can't use his resources to pay for "sphere" cards though, can I? Even if I have a match with another hero?
Let's say I want to play a Winged Guardian for two. I have Elrond and Gandalf. I couldn't do that unless the card was top of deck?
correct. he only produces a "generic" resource that can only be used to pay for neutral cards, unless you are playing it from the top of your deck - allowing him to have the printed icon of each sphere.
He's like a cards jedi.
Interestingly enough, he lets you play the top card of your deck, once per phase. He doesn't have to be involved in paying for it though. So you can still pay the costs from your other heroes.
I have yet ti try him with Hirluin and the Outland allies.
That's an interesting idea. It makes triggering that one Lore outlands character's ability a sure thing.
Something else I thought of to help resource acceleration. I like to use Expert Treasure Hunters in any Gandalf deck, but it occurs to me I can add Hidden Cache to the deck and then name the wrong card type so that it gets discarded, giving me a resource boost.
I have a hefty Gandalf Outlands deck but it never even crossed my mind to use Expert Treasure hunter.
When the deck works perfectly I have Faramir, why too many allies, and then quest for (current record) 49. If I took it out against the Black Riders I would probably die. Horribly.
Yeah, Hidden Cache + Outlands = POWER.
Expert Treasure Hunter discards the card then checks to see if it matches your choice. So it always provides you the Hidden Cache resources.
@jmrburgard - a friend of mine uses pure leadership for his outlands deck, and utilizes Strength of Arms to use Faramir more than once!
and yea, I basically consider 2x expert treasure hunters in any Gandalf deck. 3 if I'm questing with all my heroes regularly.
I'm pure running leadership. Haven't tried that. Last few games where against the Heirs of Numinor so not a lot of willpower used. Still, questing for 863 million has to be useful on occasion.
Lord of Mothrond reads "If each hero you control has a printed [Leadership] resource icon, Lord of Morthond gains: "Response: After you play a [Lore], [Spirit], or [Tactics] ally, draw 1 card."
If a non-leadership card is played from the top of the deck, Gandalf is consider to have the printed icon. But this timing window sufficient to trigger Lord of Mothrond? You play the card, G. gains the icons and Lord gains the text. Does it still have it in time to trigger the response?
I'd say yes, because he had the printed icon when you played the card.
I would argue that Lord of Morthond requires that he has the printed icon when the response is triggered after the card has been played.
LoM would not care if he has the symbol when the ally in question is played; only when it´s own ability is to be triggered.
I guess this would be the most technically correct answer. So... no LoM for Gandalf!
In a Gandalf deck, Expert Treasure Hunter does almost the same thing so I wouldn't worry about it...
