We play a "Lords" variant in my group that's basically EDH/Commander from Magic. You start with a Lord/Lady/King/Queen at the side and can play them for the cost as though they were in your hand, if they'd die, be discarded, or whatever you can instead choose to put them back into the "command zone" and increase the cost to play them by 2 (stacking each time it happens.)
I'm working on a Mad King Aerys deck, there aren't a TON of characters from the timeline that fit (age, etc.), and its even harder to find generic Targs that could pass for Western soldiers.
Curious if anyone had any suggestions for the deck, here's what I have so far:
-Main Targ Chars-
Mad King Aerys (A Dire Message)
Rhaegar Targaryen (Battle of Ruby Ford)
Viserys Targaryen (The Champion's Purse)
Daenerys Targaryen (Gates of the Citadel)
-Other Chars-
Varys?
Lyanna Stark (On Dangerous Grounds)
Magister Illyrio (Valar Morghulis)
-Kingsguard-
Ser Jaime Lannister (The Kingsguard)
Ser Barriston Selmy (City of Secrets)
Ser Gerold Hightower (Here to Serve)
Ser Arthur Dayne (The Winds of Winter)
-Targ Generics-
Dragon Knight x3 (Trial by Combat)
King's Landing Assassin x3 (Secrets and Spies)
Long Lances x3 (The House of Black and White)
Linked Advisor x3 (The Isle of Ravens)
Illyrio's Man x3 (Core Set)
-Neutral Generics-
Advisor to the Crown (Queen of Dragons)
Herald of the King (Battle of Ruby Ford)
Prolific Statesman (Here to Serve)
I could put in Lannisters but that would require an alliance and would be solely for Tywin (and maybe Jaime/Cersei.)
Mostly just looking to fill out my 35 character quota (36 with a single of Aerys on the sideboard.)
Any suggestions?
I dig the deck and the format.
My group has been doing something similar: building decks for "theme-balance-casual". But we haven't incorporated the EDH/Commander Generals yet... but we've talked about trying some variations of a General. We've also branched out into the CCG cardpool (using cards from Iron Throne and later so it has the same frames/look as the LCG cards).
I'm exploring a 2-on-1 Robert's Rebelion setup (Robert Deck and Ned Deck vs. Mad King Deck) or maybe a 2-on-4 Robert's Rebelion setup (Arryn/Stark/Baratheon/Tully vs. Mad King/Tyrell).
In terms of card ideas, I'd add the following as possibles for your deck:
-Targ Character-
House Targaryen Loyalists (The Pirates of Lys)
-Neutral Character-
Pyromancer's Apprentice (The Battle of Blackwater Bay)
Randyll Tarly (Kings of the Sea) (fits theme: fought for Targs, but doesn't have great synergy with deck gameplay: few War Crests)
Kingsguard Squire (Princes of the Sun) (fits generic theme, but nothing special)
Silent Sisters (Core Set) (fits generic theme, but nothing special)
-Targ Attachment-
Dragon Skull (City of Secrets)
-Neutral Attachment -
Champion's Favour (On Dangerous Grounds)
Tourney Lance (Tourney For The Hand)
Condemned (Trial by Combat)
The Iron Throne (A Dire Message)
-Targ Locations-
The Dragonpit (Tales from the Red Keep)
Visenya's Hill (Secrets and Spies)
Aegon's Hill (The Tower of the Hand)
-Neutral Locations-
King's Landing (Secrets and Spies)
Heart of the Kingdom (Raven's Song) (too weak without CCG "Kingdom" cards)
Twilight Market (A Time of Trials)
The Iron Throne (A Dire Message)
I don't know why you have Long Lances in there. Also, exploring allowing non-Targ House cards (with house rule no penality) opens up a lot more potential theme cards (including Tyrell allies). Likewise, adding CCG cards adds a few nice options like Kingdom cards Dorne, Dragonstone, and The Reach.
