We got a pleasant surprise at the game store last night, the Cthulhu Draft packs were in!

Lee and I each bought one starter and one booster and proceeded to do a draft.  There were only two of us so rather than using the recommended pick & pass method which is stated as being for pods of 5-8 players we did a Winston draft.  I'd never heard of it either, but it was definitely more interesting for 2 players that way.  I won't go into the mechanics here, but you can read about Winston at this link:

https://access.redha.../articles/69154

My main goal in this thread is to start documenting the draft card pool.  My hope is that later posters who open draft packs can document what cards they got that weren't already mentioned and that over time we can document the full set of cards.  If nobody else at our store gets them before then, next week we will each buy another draft booster and document the new cards from those.  I will start a separate thread for draft impressions and comments.

So to start off with, the draft starter is fixed and looks like this:

Story Deck (10):

Chaos Unleashed

Congress of the Keys

Crack in the Ice (choose a card in play and remove it from the game)

Obsessive Research

Rampaging Shoggoth (each player chooses a won story except this one and shuffles it back into the story deck, if able)

Rotting Away

The Dreams of Kingsport

The Second Dragon

The Seventh Gate

The Thing at the Gate

Two of these are new, the rest come from older story sets.

Neutral cards (7):

1xDreamlands Wanderer

1xThe Day Dreamer

2xFeint

2xCryptic Writings

1xGentleman's Club

Note that there is one Day and one Night card here to help support those types of decks.

With two players, we both ended up with tricolor decks and were able to trim a moderate amount of unwanted cards to get to the target 40-card deck.  I believe I had 49 ST/Yog/Syndicate/Neutrals after the draft.  Lee had Cthulhu/Hastur/Shub.

Here are all the cards in our draft packs, sorted by faction, type, cost, name.  A pack is 50 cards, we had some cards show up twice so the list below will not add up to 100 distinct cards:

Ah, so you guys did see an Ancient One in your packs! We've been through a fair number of draft packs and have yet to see one.

Great idea, I'll sort through cards I've drafted tonight and see if I got anything you didn't list.

I had written off drafting Cthulhu due to a paucity of players, but the description of a Winston draft I found is interesting.

Awesome, dboeren! :D Thanks for posting.

I'm quite interested in hearing more about drafting experiences in CoC. I plan to give it a try myself when it becomes available here.

And I'd especially love to create a cube, so my thanks in advance to everyone contributing to get a complete card list for this draft pool!

We have yet to draft locally. We had hoped to eventually form a cube but it seems that gaining the complete pool of 240 cards is unlikely. We also considered sleeving up the individual packs in there own uniquely colored sleeves while maintaining their order by marking them with a wet erase marker so that after drafting we could reconstitute them to get multiple drafts out of our original investment. I'm not sure if any of these ideas are viable so I'm asking for advise from those those that have actual experience with the format. There is considerable resistance to this format within our local community and I would like to approach it in such a way that I can address their concerns. When a player says, 'I already have those cards and feel the experience of the format will not be enough to make the investment worthwhile' I feel like there's very little left for me to do or say to convince them otherwise.

The format is just fun, plain and simple. Now, is it $20 worth of fun (and subsequently another 15 a head after the first time if you want to do it again) is a more difficult question to answer. In our group we're nutty over anything cthulhu so it's been a hit for us the few times we've done it, but we've all been served the kool-aid. We also got an additional bonus in that few of us had the OOP cards and would make trades afterwards.

In the end, your pitch I feel is going to have to be about the game and the people sitting around the table. It should be about together enjoying a game you all (presumably) love in a fresh way, no f---s given about the material cards you'll be taking home after. Can you put a price of $20 on that?

Our plan is that when we get enough packs (6?) we'll just use those cards as a cube.

If you already have a full collection, the value comes from the drafting experience (although it's nice to get some extra copies of highly played cards). We had 8 players for our draft and all of us really enjoyed it. It's very refreshing to play with numerous "binder" cards and not have to play against the same old power cards. I highly recommend trying it at least once.

Also, if you have a full collection, you might not need to buy the Starter pack. Several of us just used our copies of the 7 neutral cards we already had and used the opponent's story deck (or borrowed one). It may be hard to convince some players to give it a try without giving them an incentive, like prize support. Making a cube is another option but it can be a pain to build and maintain without butchering your other decks, although that will give you another use for all those draft cards!

Awesome!

This is almost the complete pool. I've pasted all the reported cards in an Excel Sheet and removed the duplicates. There's a total of 217 different cards (+5 from the starter; 15 if I count the story cards, too).

According to FFG's announcement, there's a total of 240 cards in the pool. I'm just not sure if they also count the cards from the starters...

The number of distinct cards by faction, so far:

Agency: 23

Miskatonic: 22

Syndicate: 23

Silver Twilight: 22

Cthulhu: 25

Hastur: 23

Shub-Niggurath: 25

Yog-Sothoth: 25

Neutral: 29 (+5 from Starter; + 10 Stories)

It looks to me like there should be 25 cards per faction + 40 neutrals.

@DwarvenPony: You mentioned a card called 'Dart Depths' (belonging to Shub-Niggurath) - what card is that supposed to be?

I seriously doubt that - except for the new story cards, of course.
