Limits and Maximums

“Limit once per X” is a limit that appears on cards that remain in play through the resolution of their effect. Each copy of an ability with such a limit may be used once per each period of X.

The Emperor’s Champion

Combat Action: A target ready enemy army unit at this planet must be declared as an attacker and this unit declared as a defender during your opponent’s next combat turn, if able. (Limit once per combat round.)

Talyesin’s Warlocks

Combat Action: Discard a Warrior card from your hand to ready this unit. (Limit once per combat round.)

Are triggered abilities with a limit able to be initiated unlimitedly outside of their limit period? For example, suppose Talyesin's Warlocks commit to planet 1. May they use their combat action in the action window before the battle at planet 1 and then once again during the first combat round? Similarly for The Emperor's champion.

Not related to the same restriction, but interestingly if either of them are at a planet other than p1 where a battle will take place, they can use their ability at least once during the last combat round of the planet 1 battle to effectively have it happen twice during their battle's first combat round.

Realized that the Emperor's Champion would need to target a ranged unit with any initiations before a battle for the effect to work.

When I was reading this was to first check that "combat actions " occur in the phase and not in a round by default. It's true for RRG entry on actions.

Next for the champion I thought that he could tank all the enemy ranged because of this, but the limit could limit how often it occurs, not only how often you can initiates.

For the warlock however, I can't seem to find a reason why you couldn't ready before ranged skirmish for "free" and again later in the combat round.

My guess is you can't trigger abilities with a limit of X times per combat round when no combat round is under way.

Probably, you will not be able to trigger the reaction again until a combat round ends; so, it doesn't matter when you trigger the ability, you will never been able to trigger it a second time in the same round, I think.

Since only a single unit can be announced as an attacker during your opponent's next combat turn, what would be the point of triggering The Emperor's Champion multiple times? After your opponent's next combat turn has passed, you'd still have to target a new unit, which you cannot do until tge next combat round.

After your opponent's next combat turn has passed, you'd still have to target a new unit, which you cannot do until tge next combat round.

The advantage would be if they controlled ranged units and non ranged units. Lets imagine they have a dead eye, and a leman russ at planet 1 with your champion and some other units.

IFF POSSIBLE

You could trigger the emperors champion ability after the mobile units have moved but before the battle at the first planet to force the dead eye to shoot the champion. your opponent has multitude of ways to invalidate this before it happens, but the restriction just says "next combat turn". Then while in that combat round you could activate again to force the leman russ to attack the champion, sparing your other units.

EDIT: After reading the OP again, and the text from the RRG, I am going to have to acknowledge that these two abilities can only be used in the combat round.

Each copy of an ability with such a limit may be used once per each period of X.

This essentially places another restriction on those abilities. Combat actions can only be played during the combat phase. Combat actions with "limit X per combat round" can only be played during a combat round.
