Hey folks,
Just thought I'd take the time to write up a quick report about a recent regional I played in and was fortunate enough to win.
The Edmonton (Canada) regional was not this past Saturday but the one before. I had been meaning to post a report sooner but have been incredibly busy with school assignments.
Leading up to this regionals I had not played much Star Wars. Due to school, work, and various other things going on I did not really have the time to prepare. Fortunately, I had helped Master Jedi Adam and Kiramode test for worlds so I did have some decks I was comfortable with and had been tested against very strong players. While helping them test for worlds I happened to build a Sithspawn deck just for fun. I hadn't used fearsome and foul and also hadn't played with hunters of the jedi yet. I really liked the theme so I decided to give it a go. My initial list was:
2 power of the dark side
2 dark lord of the sith
2 hunters of the jedi
2 brothers of the sith
1 fearsome and foul
1 maw of madness (also wanted to try out that set)
The deck felt very strong and won its first game. However, I felt it could be slightly better. I wanted another great resource and a strong objective. Naturally plan of the prophetess took maw of madness' place. The set is all around strong and each card can be impactful in its own right. The drawback of plan of the prophetess has always been the two units. However, I quickly realized that when hunters of the jedi is in play (which should be often as in this deck you always take that one given the option) the low health on sariss and the servant are not only no longer a liability but actually welcomed.
So the new list became:
2 power of the dark side
2 dark lord of the sith
2 hunters of the jedi
2 brothers of the sith
1 fearsome and foul
1 plan of the prophetess
I played a quite a few more games with the deck and it had still yet to lose. So after not playing any Star Wars for almost a month I still felt very good about that deck. But, this left me still trying to figure out an ideal lightside deck.
I thought about playing my Vima deck, which I really enjoy but I knew it was fairly inconsistent. Also, ever since I saw Daughter of Tanaab spoiled, I knew I wanted to play it at that regional. Following fate has long been one of my favourite LS sets. My friends and I have played a lot of multiplayer (2v2) and following fate is absolutely amazing in that format. However, I still knew it was quite good in single player. Especially given the strength of the Sith/Scum decks. The new jedi set looked so compatible with Following Fate that I had to give it a go.
However, as I previously mentioned I became so busy with life that I did not have the chance to try out the set. The day before the regionals I went out to get the pack from my local store and they still did not have it! Then the morning of my regionals I drove out to a store and picked it up. I had never used the cards but I thought "what the heck, this could be really good and will regardless be fun so lets do it!". I quickly sleeved up a deck that looked like this.
2 Following Fate
2 May the force be with you
2 the daughter of tanaab
1 heroes journey
1 flight of the crow
1 the forgotten masters
1 a new beginning
But....
Then I took one look at the deck and thought "hmmmmm". I had no protect in it other than BTS obi with sabre equipped!!! But, I really love Ashoka's set and am a big Ashoka fan. I remember watching her on tv starting in like grade 5 or 6 and following her progression through the series. Still, as much as my heart wanted Tano in the deck, my brain knew that Qu Rhan was the right call. Another resource (2 for 1 but still), great objective, protect, protection, and the rejuve to find with sarenda. Qu Rhan needed to take Ashoka's place in the deck. It simply had to happen. It was the will of the force.
I showed up at the event and saw a few familiar faces, including Dan (chunky gorillas)! Dan is a great guy and it is always fun to play him!
The event itself had probably about 10 people including a former Canadian national champion (chunky gorillas) as well as two players who had just attended worlds. I immediately knew this was a high calibre group of players.
The event itself was 4 rounds of Swiss action followed by a cut to top 4. I was fortunate enough to place first after the swiss. I played against a lot of navy and spark/zeb. However, I also played against a fighter deck where Dan totally got me with an IHYN! Another highlight was the sleuth deck I played against, where he almost beat my Sithspawn.
In the first game of the top cut I chose to play DS as my Sithspawn deck hadn't lost yet. I was able to pull off a win in a tight game there. So next game my lightside deck was up and I was playing for a spot in the finals. The stakes were high here as a win would mean I'd have to lose twice in the finals to not win the tournament. My jedi deck came through with a clutch opening hand which included valley or the jedi, sarenda, and some other goodies. Fist turn valley was a very lucky draw and enabled me to quickly get out yoda, BTS obi, and luke the subsequent turns. My jedi mains were able to power their way to a spot in the finals despite a late game sector lockdown scare. Sector lockdown got flipped after I popped an objective and I had yoda, a gotal, a lost master, and I think r2 in the discard pile. Fortunately, I was able to hold off for one more turn and then drew Qu Rhan and a gotal (I retained the force) to seal the deal. I couldn't believe I'd made it to the finals!!!
First game of the finals my jedi deck was up again. He was on his navy fortress deck with the new addition of inexorable destruction. It was a tense game with the moldy crow soaring around in all its majestic beauty. However, I ended up being 1 damage short from winning and with some nice plays, he was able to seal it the next turn. We were off to a game 2!
It felt kinda fitting that I would pilot my Sithspawn deck which had yet to let me down in a winner take all scenario. My opponent is a VERY good player and I knew this was gonna be a huge challenge. I draw my starting objectives, double hunters of the jedi, power of the dark side, and fearsome and foul). I was a little worried I didn't get Dark Lord of the Sith but figured with a good starting hand I'd hopefully be ok. And then I drew the god hand. Dark temple, royal guard champion, gorc, and pic!!!! I basically just sat there staring at this ludicrous hand in disbelief and managed to utter the words "keep" haha
Anyways, it was another great game and incredibly well played on his part. Ultimately though I was able to pull out the victory.
I just want to say that I had an absolute blast! It was a really fun event and I definitely had a great deal of luck on my side to be fortunate enough to win among such a great group of players and people!
