Looking at the cheap RuneWars minis on sale at Expo (+ awful last edition of Runebound), FFG have been making rare games mistakes recently. Losing the GW license to enter minis may prove costly. I know I will never buy FFG minis to punish them for killing GW license products like Forbidden Stars II. And it's the same for all my gaming friends. WhizKids are a truly awful home for the GW licenses.

Please FFG, think about the diversity that this game needs. And try to balance asymmetry in card pools.

Pretty sure it was GW that pulled the license.  If you're going to boycott you may want to start there?

Due to Brad's spoilers from Birmingham, I think there are at least two strongholds in the Elemental cycle as well.

Of course it was GW who pulled the license - because FFG had decided to move into their bread and butter domain of fantasy minis as a direct competitor! How can you license to a competitor of your staple business?

FFG made the decision to move into minis and lose so much loved IP. Which they were running so well too. GW didn't mind X-Wing as a lucrative moneyspinner. But to move into fantasy minis and expect GW to not react?

Your argument is like saying "you filed for divorce so it's your fault, nothing to do with my adultery".

If FFG fantasy minis becomes a success (and by the bargain clearance prices 1 year later, it seems not), this would vindicate the decision to enter the minis market knowing this would then provoke losing their GW license. So my friends and I are united that we will do our bit to ensure the decision is not vindicated. It will be very interesting to listen to the FFG status report at Gencon to see how they performed. That is if Asmodee allow FFG to continue to be so transparent (because they were once never profiteering until they stumbled onto a cash cow called X-Wing and got gobbled up, now the whole company seems to worship at the Temple of Mammon). The only way to hit companies like that is in the pocket.

FFG was a brand we hardcore gamers loved. The successor to the ludicrous component quality of short-lived Eagle Games, the fusion of Ameritrash theme and Eurogame elegant mechanics captured our imagination. They were the good guys who invented LCGs to not fleece card gamers and the game quality was so amazingly good with superb designers like Eric Lang for LCGs, Corey Konisweska, Kevin Wilson and their CEO Christian Petersen for classic boardgames. And gamers loved them because they gave great value and had clever innovative mechanics steeped in theme.

Yes, their marketing operations were often a disaster like the NRDB Cease and Desist, the lack of stock post-Gencon and distribution logistics. As well as Organised Play that was patchy at best and has since slowly devolved in prizes to paltry levels. But once you got the game, the play quality and value compared to their competitors was undeniable.

FFG HAVE LOST THEIR WAY. A BIT.

I suspect it's Asmodee pushing them down fixating on lucre more than maintaining game quality and love of their customers. But that's what happens, Mr Petersen, when you sell your soul, your much-loved baby.

What great new buzzy boardgame have they launched? The Fallout license game had zero buzz at Expo compared to historical outputs (because it's so drab to fit the theme). The FFG area used to be so packed with so much buzz. This year it was sad to see it so empty, living off past glories like Twilight Imperium IV. The focus is on minting as much money out of the Star Wars license mainly. Let's reskin Diplomacy for Game of Thrones and L5R. Let's reskin Cosmic Encounter for Game of Thrones. It's all such lazy design. They are no longer a superb games design company for games afficionados. They are just another corporate merchandiser, maximising profit at the cost of their historic high quality.

I have been angry and exasperated by FFG because it's like your favourite child. You love the child and don't want to see them make these mistakes. But such a promising child has grown up to be just another corporate clone, taking lazy shortcuts (The Perfect Gift design is in almost all LCGs). And gamers are clever customers: you can't hope to fool them for long.

It's so sad when you fall out of love (with your favourite games company).

Yeah, a little off topic the GW-FFG thing, though like the loyal mate I am I'm probably going to side with FFG over GW in this divorce, even without knowing the details. :)

Re: second strongholds, I agree. The sooner we see all the clan boxes out, the better.

Coming back to topic, anyone had any thoughts on the inevitable Support of the Scorpion role? Assuming it'll be symmetrical to Support of the Phoenix, I'm thinking 18 influence into Scorpion cards is actually relatively stronger in potential than the same for phoenix.

I mean, imagine triple AFWTD, triple Forged Edict and triple Meek Informant being in a deck while still having access to the solid dynasty characters of Lion or Crane. That's pretty sweet, even if it costs the restricted slot.

Actually, this needs its own thread... Will go make that now.

This is not what happened though unfortunately.  The timing makes it certainly look like it because of when things were announced.  You're still completely within your right to boycott their games, minis, anything you want.  I won't be buying the minis either myself, but I wouldn't have bought them for any game.  But don't boycott because you think FFG decided to just jettison the license because they felt like losing a bunch of money.  GW pulled the license for reasons you have not listed :).

I have the same information about FFG deciding to go make some miniatures and they don't need Warhammer.

Christian Petersen wanted to make Runewars Miniatures , and GW had to revoke the license.

We all hated on GW , but turned out they weren't the bad guys we wanted them to be.

So, experimenting with the new stronghold has left me pretty impressed.

Tried this build, thinking it was sheer jank:

https://fiveringsdb....1ccf16fca4/view

Intended to bid 1 every turn, ignore the secondary ability, basically play hard for dishonor victory.

Combos of note:

Stronghold/Spies at Court

Charge or Ambush/Reprieve

Reclusive Zokujin/Keeper Initiates

All the Shinobi stuff.

I'd note I considered this my silly deck, as to me proper scorpion uses Walking the Way, Cloud The Mind and Shugenja to fish for hidden moon dojo, and City of Lies with AFWTD and Display of Power. This deck does none of that, but does other stuff. Also, no Way of the Scorpion, as Scorpion vs Scorpion is already the weakest matchup, so why exacerbate that...?

So 5rings going down has made me move to Bushi Builder. It is better. But I really hate all the synergy tips. It's like doing crosswords on easy, not cryptic. Isn't part of the challenge working all of this out for yourself? Maybe I'm old fashioned. At least I'm consistent with my hatred of traits as telegraphed deck-building.

So Friday afternoon deck building. Time to try Scorpion and good old fashioned control with global removal.

Core concept is standard control of stalling (Waning Hostilities, usual Scorpion gimping including Fiery Madness option) followed by Jorojin's Curse - which you can play on their character with 1 Fate they didn't use due to Waning Hostilities! (Also on Sinister Soshi and Meek Informant in the Fate phase.)

Favourable Ground / Clarity of Purpose + finishers (Shoju / Yojimbo / Hiroue / Yunako)
Back Alley + Liar / Diplomat / Actress

I miss Esper Control in Magic and this feels the closest to it in L5R so far.
