Yeah, I know I’m late to the party. I’m not a card player, but I’ve had my eyes on Conquest since it came out and now it can be had for cheap.

I got three core boxes for $14 a piece, the two large expansions for $16 a piece, and now I’m pondering what small expansions I should get.

It would seem that if I only get the Warlord expansions I will end up with 2 Warlords for each of the nine factions, which seems sufficient for my casual use, but will the rest be balanced enough?

Getting the second cycle only add about $22 to the cost, but, hey, that’s $22 I could direct somewhere else if I don’t really need these cards to have nine balanced factions with 2 Warlords each.

Thanks.

Well welcome indeed to the game :) And gratz on picking it up for a reasonable price. Are you in the US? Most juicy ebay deals on the game seems to be within the US, which is slightly annoying for those of us who live in Europe because of exorbitant customs- and shipping costs. At least for some of us...

Anyway, if you can settle for the first cycle (the warlord cycle) only, I'd say go for it. Beyond the first cycle the meta shifted quite a lot, especially with the introduction of the two neutral cards "STC Fragment" and "Backlash", both of which is in the Necron deluxe expansion. Personally, I would still take the second cycle too and especially so for the price you mention! It sounds like a steal, so to speak :D

There are many decks to be found on this site for inspiration by the way and some of the very early of those are bound to be made with core- and warlord cycle cards only. I will also recommend you check out Dan's outstanding Conquest deckbuilder at www.traxissector.com - here you can even set up which (as well as how many) expansion packs and core sets you own, which can make deckbuilding with actual cards somewhat easier.

Good luck in the Traxis sector and if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers

I'm not sure if "having the same number of warlords for all factions" is the right way to think about balance.

A better approach to balance is getting enough cards so that each faction can have a viable deck. If you skip the second cycle (Planetfall), you'll be missing a lot of important cards that helped to make some of the underperforming factions become more competitive. This is especially true for Tyranids; you're gonna have a tough time playing Nids with only those cards from Great Devourer.

AM also got a huge power boost from the cards in Planetfall cycle.

Corrupted Teleportarium alone made a whole bunch of Chaos cards suddenly viable.

And you can get the whole cycle for only $22? Those cards would have cost you $90 at retail.
