Hello everyone.

I was fortunate enough to acquire an entire collection of everything.  (Jungles of Nectavus was extremely difficult to find).

I'm the type of player that "needs everything" due to my completionist attitude.

As I do reading I've seen Team Apoka custom cards.  Without know much about the game I did further research.

The cycles certainly do look very nice (aesthetically), and the ease of printing (they did a great job setting up print projects) and cost is reasonable.

My question is are these cards valuable to have?  From doing more reading I've seen mixed --> positive reviews.  Some stating certain cards are too powerful.  I've also seen concerns about another group (BCL or something?) also making cards on their own which in my opinion which make things difficult as I would need my play group to also buy into those or only allow one custom set of cards.

Either way, just wanting to get people's opinions as this is what it does come down to in the end.

PS:  I'm looking to try Tyrannid because I'm so new to the game I don't want to worry about the "alignment" faction wheel yet so this seems like a simpler faction to tackle since they are not allowed to allign with any other faction.

Welcome to the game blackhalo23 :)

And gratz on acquiring most of the official cards! I'm not sure why Jungles of Nectavus is so hard to find as there were better warpacks than that particular one in the last cycle, but maybe they did a diminished print run with Jungles, I dunno.

Anyway, back in the day when the game was cancelled the then-most prominent members of the Conquest community (world champions, podcast hosts and other long-time content creators) decided to continue making new content in the form of expansion packs made up of fan-designed cards, which were to undergo a lengthy play-test before release. One of the members behind this initiative already ran an online tournament called the Black Crusade League (or BCL). They decided to use that already-popular name for their cards and group.

Then, out of the blue, a Chinese player or group announced that he too would be making fan-made cards. He created a profile on this site with the name of Team Apoka and started posting card designs, announcing tournament kits and promising a lot of expansions (which he has certainly delivered too.) It turned out Apoka had a professional game designer onboard (which quite shows in a lot of their designs imo) and as such the output pace was staggering, whereas the BCL members focused on giving their ideas a lot of play-testing before publishing cards which slowed down their output considerably by comparison.

This rather sudden new situation caused a schism within the community, as you can well imagine, with many members siding with one or the other fan-design group.

Most regrettably indeed for the community as a whole, things got very ugly and in the end the BCL group decided it simply wasn't worth their time and effort with all the abuse and scheming about on social media. I'm not on social media myself, so I don't know for sure what happened, but never mind that now.

Now there is only Apoka fan-made content (as far as I know) though by all accounts they have moved to Facebook.

We still play the game in Copenhagen (with cards) but we play official cards only. Personally, I don't use Apoka's cards. They are quite well designed, most of them at least, and the skill of their professional game designer is quite apparent, which is nice, but imho they just don't feel like Conquest. Maybe it's due to the new mechanics they've invented, maybe it's in the different wording on their cards. (Different to officially made Conquest that is.) But personally I don't feel as though these cards belong in 'genuine' Conquest and the Traxis sector.

This is of course merely my personal opinion - as a player who have played the game almost since its inception - but for you as a new player that might be quite a different story :)

Anyway, welcome indeed to the glorious Traxis sector - hope you have loads of fun here!

Cheers

Thank you very much for that well written bounty of information Skyknight!

I'll likely start with FFG official only as well then and see where to go from there.  Thinking of trying a Tyranid deck and reading through their 3 Warlord guides.

@Team Apoka

Wow, I'm sorry if I have offended you - that was never my intention, just like I never wish to offend anyone. As I told blackhalo23 I think your cards are solid and I applaud your professional game designer, so why do you think I am lying as you initially had it in your post, or as you put it now rewriting anything??

If you take issue with the background I provided, then I merely sought to put things into context now that blackhalo23 asked - again, with absolutely no intention of insulting anyone - so please calm down. I have never spoken poorly about you or your project, so I'm a little sad that you should speak of me like that out of nowhere :(

@blackhalo23

Just to be clear blackhalo, I didn't intent to dissuade you from exploring fan-made content (I think perhaps that's why the above poster reacted as they did) I merely tried to provide you with some background knowledge now that you asked. As I said a lot of the fan-made content are indeed very good, but for me being such an old player it just doesn't do it for me. That is not to say that you, as a new player, wouldn't enjoy it very much. You probably will. I can certainly appreciate how players want to keep this wonderful game alive (I aspire to that myself where I live) and probably the best long term way to keep a living card game alive is through new content. Certainly.

Welcome again :)

Thanks for the replies everyone.  This wasn't intended to cause any friction.  I was looking for information and both SkyKnight and TeamApoka provided great amounts of it.

Now I'm going to be starting to go through this collection.  I also joined the FaceBook Group and will be lurking there as well.

This makes 3 completed card games I play now =)

(Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars and Conquest).

Hello! And welcome to Conquest!

I bought into Conquest right after it finished, and picked up all the official cards as things were winding down. In my opinion, it is the continued release of Apoka cards, and the community enthusiasm generated by this, that keeps me as interested as I am. It's great fun waiting for each new pack to be released, and to start re-thinking deck ideas based on what comes out. Even watching the occasional match video pop up on Facebook is so much more fun when a new Warlord appears due to the Apoka creations. Most of the community activity seems to be on Facebook and Discord now, (and, of course, OCTGN) and the discussion focuses around the new card releases and the tournaments run by Apoka, which obviously make use of their cards.

The card releases are seriously professional, and seriously fun. Some of their warlord releases in particular, are really rather lovely. Great, fun, designs that push the design space of Conquest further afield. I think there are some minor concerns about power creep, but any development of a living card game is going to bring its fair share of objections and concerns, and it isn't breaking the game or anything remotely like that. I reckon this sort of back and forth criticism is just part of the fun.

Clearly, I'd recommend jumping on board with Apoka. Get yourself on OCTGN to play online matches too. It is updated to include Apoka cards, as is the excellent Traxissector deck builder linked to above.

I haven't tried any of the Team Apoka cards, so I can't speak to those, but...

PS:  I'm looking to try Tyrannid because I'm so new to the game I don't want to worry about the "alignment" faction wheel yet so this seems like a simpler faction to tackle since they are not allowed to allign with any other faction.

I love Tyranids. I sort of dabbled with Chaos prior to the Tyranid deluxe, and then barely touched any other faction again.

But while their deckbuilding is super simple compared to other factions, they're one of the most complicated factions to play (largely because of the Synapse unit, and the fact that FFG balanced them into the ground). If you like Tyranids, by all means play Tyranids, but do be ready to lose a bit initially against the other factions because the 'Nids have a pretty steep learning curve initially. :)
