Since it just says "choose and ready a character." does that mean this could be used on insane characters as well as exhausted?
FAQ reads:
(2.10) Ready/Exhausted vs Committed/Uncommitted
...
Note that only exhausted cards can be readied, and only readied cards can be exhausted. Insane characters are neither ready nor exhausted when turned facedown, regardless of whether they are upright or 90 degrees sideways, and cannot be readied (or exhausted) until they are first restored.
Does this card have any synergy at all with Master of the Myths? I know the Master's ability is considered a character ability, but it isn't a triggered ability because it isn't in play, right? I'm thinking the Master's ability wouldn't give me any opportunity to trigger Cathouse, but I wanted to hear your input as well. Thanks.
Isn't La Bella Luna a superior choice instead of Cathouse?
Eh, in a mono-Syndicate deck almost certainly. Include some Crooked Attorneys with your mostly Criminal characters and you're off to the races. But note that the Seedy Restaurant only readies Criminal characters.
Now imagine a dual-faction deck with lots of pay-1 abilities (Clover Club Torch Singer, Lena Di Boerio, Street Tough, Gold Pocket Watch), You could be readying important non-Syndicate characters with Cathouse. Cathouse is a more flexible card with greater design possibilities, I think.
Agree with Carthoris. In my experience, at least, I've found that cards like La Bella Luna are easy to grasp right off the bat, and they perform pretty much exactly how you'd expect them to perform. (Which, by the way, every deck needs cards like that, so it's not a bad thing, per se.)
On the other hand, cards like Cathouse initially make me scratch my head and think, "Hmm, how is this meant to be used?" until I actually give it a deeper look and I realize how OP it could be in the right build. I only have 1 copy of Cathouse, but if I had 3, I'd feature it in a Green/Brown deck with Serpents. So many Serpents change their icons by paying 1, so Cathouse would be a house in that deck. Plus, I love the thematic build of a Cathouse full of Serpents, all disguised as madams and seductresses. It's like from Dusk til Dawn or something.
As it is, I built a Green/Silver deck with Serpents instead, partially because I have 3 copies of Crystal of the Elder Things. It can do some nice things with the Serpents as well, but I'd much rather have Cathouse in that deck, if only I had 2 more copies of it!
That sounded like so much fun, I just had to draw it up:

Looks good. Nicely done, Carthoris. Now you're really making me wish I had 3 core sets!
Yeah, I just built it the way I ordinarily would from my collection (3x Core and at least 1 of everything, but stuck with singles from a few 40-card APs), and I see I included 3x of four different cards from the Core. With the end of expansions, I'd think this year should see some bargains on Core Sets .
I just thought of another direction that G/B Serpent deck above could go. Keep Cathouse in there to ready your serpents, and add The Penthouse to keep refreshing your domains so you can keep paying for the triggered abilities. The best part is you could call the deck "From the Cathouse to the Penthouse."
