Does the card played return to your opponent's hand or is it discarded?
The event card is discarded as you have played it.
The only differences here are 1) you're playing an event from your opponent's hand and 2) you don't pay any costs. The rest of the action works just like playing an event from your hand.
Note that because you don't pay any costs, events with cost X = 0 which means you might not have a viable target. In this case it can't be played so it will stay in your opponent's hand.
