Can I see if I've got this... I play this card but the action effect means I can 'steal' an an OPPONENTS non-ancient one card and put it at the bottom of MY deck?
No, the event exhausts their character, it doesn't take control. And then this event goes to the bottom of your deck.
"This card" means "the card this text is printed on". i.e. - Pay Tribute. Not the card targeted by Pay Tribute.
right gotcha! lol does it get easier to understand? right going to see if I can sort another one!
The main "trick" is just to apply the card text exactly as it's written and not try to assume anything or add text that isn't there because it seems like common sense. If it doesn't specifically SAY that it applies to only your characters (for instance) then it doesn't.
thanks, I'm beginning to see that now!
I've begun to realize that Pay Tribute can really come in handy when you need to exhaust your own character (Henry Knoll, Jon Pechon, Numbers Runner, etc.), but you can't afford to risk them at a story. This isn't ideal, as you'd obviously prefer to exact tribute from one of your opponent's guys. Sometimes you won't have Johnny Valone, a Meat Wagon, a Crowbar, Blind Fighting, and the like available though, and Henry Knoll's 2 arcane icons don't inspire much confidence for surviving a combat struggle. In those lean times, Pay Tribute is a nice back up that can enable Knoll, and that just might save your bacon. Throw in an Irish Channel, and you recur it a couple times until you draw into a more efficient alternative.
