Is this card used very much? it could potentially discard several cards in one go but the opponent can get two of them back from the discard pile, that's right isn't it? meaning they could retrieve two of the hand they just discarded?

They can take any 2 cards from the discard, it doesn't have to be ones they just discarded. It's not really played much due to the high cost of 4 which is very high for an event. In this case the effect could be strong but it won't reliably be so as your opponent will likely have a small hand by the time you can afford to play it. It would probably be best against Miskatonic who might have enough draw to be hitting them for a lot of cards but still questionable. Bottom line is that if you're paying four you want to be assured of a good return on that investment.
