From the wording, it looks like if you activate both effects in the same turn the card will actually destroy itself... Talk about a time bomb!

I don't think so. In the moment you pay for the "other" Action, the card gains the text (card changes) and loses the other. So it hasn't the day/night trait anymore that would cause the card to destroy itself. Otherwise it would trigger both actions simultaneously.
Where are you getting the idea that it would lose the other? Both actions say you gain that text until the end of the turn. Neither say anything about losing it if another action is triggered.
Correct, I think triggering this twice in one turn destroys it. The idea probably is to choose one or the other turn by turn.
