This is supposed to take the place of the restricted Museum Curator, perhaps. But it ends up being too many stipulations on the effect. You need this in play, you need a location, and then an attachment. Maybe I can see this in a char-lit combo deck. It is an explorer so maybe in an explorer deck too, since it's not uncommon to have Infirmary, Atwood Science Hall, or The Hall School in that mono-MU build, but then what attachments would you run?
Because it's rather situational, you really need to build your deck around this theme for the card to work. There are no cards which are both Locations and Attachments, so you need substantial numbers of two different types of cards in the deck to be worthwhile, especially since you're paying 1 to trigger the ability.
However, being both an Explorer and Student offers some synergy you could try to capitalize on and make it more worth including. Likely the best home is in a mono-MU Explorers deck which already has some Locations you probably want to include.
I tried this previously in a Cthulhu/MU deck using Flooded Vault and Khopesh, along with Sword of Y'ha-tallo. The theory was when i either play or use Flooded Vault, I can trigger the Trailblazer, so I can dig out one attachment, and hopefully pull the other.
Then, use Elijah Conrad to recycle the Vaults.
In practice, I was using my domains to play things, so never really wanted to trigger the effect, or be able to.
Yeah, I used it in an Explorer deck back when it was released. Not for its ability but just to boost the number of Explorers in my deck. Now, there's a few better options.
Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, this card is primarily valuable as a cheap way to get 2 investigation icons. If the Response comes off, that's gravy. In an Explorer deck, it's lovely with Ultima Thule: no matter which comes into play first, it will help the other.
It's an unconventional approach, but maybe run UT with the Black Goat's Milk? You'd like to guarantee that the UT's ability pays off, if possible, so why not "cheat" with an Attachment that can bounce back to the top of the deck? You need some Locations that you can sacrifice at a moment's notice *cough*Ice Shaft*cough*, but that's not a big deal.
Revealed to your opponent too though. UT can also be "cheaply" used to trigger Misinformation.
Sadly, while this card is in my main deck I don't think I have ever used it's ability. I mostly include it as one of the few non-unique explorers and to make up numbers for the 2-cost point, but my explorer deck doesn't have any attachments and the scrying effect never seemed worth paying for.
Yeah, I have it in a deck with a lot of Students, so I'm making use of its other Subtype. It's nice paired with Sports Scholarship and especially Rabbit's Foot. Not a tournament deck or anything, but good for a casual game.
My explorers deck has Open for Inspection as the sole Attachment since this makes a good combo with Prof William Web and Combing the Archives, si UT's ability is not entirely useless but hardly vital.
