FAQ 4.0

Does Andrew Chapman (The Key and the Gate F48) protect characters against the triggered effect of Khopesh of the Abyss (Ancient Relics F16) effect?
Andrew Chapman’s ability reads: “Disrupt: When an opponent’s effect would destroy or make you sacrifice a character you control, instead discard a card from your hand. Then, place a success token on Andrew Chapman.”
His ability would be able to disrupt the final wound that would send a character you control to the discard pile, but if hte character had toughness it would only disrupt the final wound.

Since Chapman specifically protects against an opponent's effect, it seems he doesn't offer anything in the event of a character being destroyed by a combat struggle.  Even though my opponent won the combat struggle, I would guess that isn't considered my opponent's effect.  It's a game effect.

Chapman works pretty well with Protecting the Anirniq, but he's of no use if his friend is being destroyed because of combat.  I guess that's more of a Brette Wulfssen job.

You are correct. Chapman can't prevent the effects of a Combat Struggle.  Instead, he protects your characters from the far more dangerous destruction/sacrifice effects.  Temple, Khopesh, Plague Stone, etc. are the real threats that he is meant to counter.
