Ben is a walking Ancestral Recall, can be abused with decks properly built around him and even has a decent body for a reasonable cost.

He'll also appropriately gain Toughness from Patron of the Arts, help reduce the cost of playing Tru'nembra and win you arcane struggles.

What's not to like ? 5/5.

Common sense says your opponent will probably tolerate you drawing 1 extra card every so often than drawing 3 cards all at once. That's the situation between Starving Artist and Ben. Ben might actually be better if his icons and skill were worse, making it less palatable for an opponent to spend removal effects on him. I run both SA and Ben, so I think they work best together. But there's something to be said for looking innocuous (SA) rather than being an obvious threat (Ben Herriot).

Playing cards your opponent wants to remove is a good thing! You should do it whenever possible lol

Generally agree, and I like Herriot. He's just especially susceptible when he first lands on the table. You have to be careful about when you deploy him because he warrants extra protection or a way to restore him right away. He's not subtle, but he is vulnerable and slow. High risk, high reward chap.
