Deck Name: | Winter Conquest (denial control) |
Deck Contents: | Total Cards (60) House (1) House Greyjoy Agenda (1) Conquest (SoW) x1 Plot (7) A Time for Ravens (ACoS) x1 Loyalty Money Can Buy (QoD) x1 Forgotten Plans (KotStorm) x1 Retaliation! (ASoSilence) x1 The Winds of Winter (TWoW) x1 Negotiations at the Great Sept (TPoL) x1 Valar Morghulis (Core) x1 Character (35) Balon Greyjoy (FaI) x1 Robb Stark (LoW) x1 Catelyn Stark (AToT) x3 Wintertime Marauders (ACoS) x3 Newly Made Lord (TftH) x3 Mance Rayder (TWoW) x1 The Sparr (APS) x1 Alannys Greyjoy (ODG) x1 Maester Murenmure (CbtC) x1 Moqorro (VD) x1 Maester Wendamyr (KotS) x1 Maester Aemon (Core) x1 Theon Greyjoy (SoW) x3 Ser Jaime Lannister (TK) x1 Ser Meryn Trant (TK) x1 Ser Mandon Moore (TK) x1 Varys (SaS) x1 Arya Stark (CoS) x1 Syrio Forel (TftRK) x1 Coldhands (THtW) x1 Ice Fisherman (TWoW) x3 Samwell Tarly (TRS) x1 Carrion Bird (ASoS) x3 Location (17) Longship Iron Victory (KotS) x1 River Blockade (RoR) x1 The Iron Mines (KotS) x3 The Kingsroad 23 (FaI) x3 Gatehouse (KotS) x3 The Searoad (KotStorm) x3 River Row (QoD) x1 Street of Steel (Core) x1 Street of Sisters (Core) x1 Attachment (5) Nymeria (Core) x1 Captain of the Iron Fleet (TGM) x1 White Raven (TWoW) x3 Event (3) Storming the Shore (FF) x3 What if Balon had taken up Robb's offer using Theon as their emissary? [Meta consideration: playing Winter is safe as no competitive deck would surely play Song of Fire?] The premise of this deck is denial control using the amazing new Theon. (1) Deny income generation Maruaders, Newly Made, Mance, Sparr, Alannys (mid-game), Murenmure, Fisherman, Blockade, Captain, White Raven, Storming the Shore - this is enough choke to slow down the laying of characters so that any opponent's card draw advantage is of lesser value (Alannys later helps with event control) (2) Deny military challenges There are 5 recurring saves (Moqorro, Wendamyr, Aemon, Nymeria, Winter Arya) while Mines are for opponent's Valar. (3) Deny intrigue challenges There are 3 copies of Winter Catelyn (the reason for Conquest) with 6 shadows support including Syrio/Arya repetition for Jaime/Trant triggers. (4) Implode the enemy board presence Marauders and 3 copies of Theon Greyjoy (who accepts both Nymeria and Captain attachments) with Coldhands and Varys for targeted removal while the choked up hand increases in size with worrying Kingsroad random disruption Pumps include Balon, Robb, Moqorro (going 2nd) and Iron Victory along with 7 stealth and 2 deadly to help land the attacks with the Marauders. Economy is slow sustainable build-up with no seas (50% Stark or shadow), instead has 6 limited gold bonuses (too many? prefer to be safe in Winter), 3 streets and 3 Kingsroad. With only the Mines as discards (no seas) leaving 15 locations, triggering Balon should occur except vs Warships (Mandon for mirror match), definite once implosion occurs. With no Goodbrothers, having more locations is otherwise unimportant. Card draw is limited, just Jaime + 6 shadows, Sam + 6 ravens, Iron Victory and Negotiations as hand reset. As a weakness for both Houses, the choke and hand disruption of Kingsroad 23 should make this less of an issue. Maybe some more is needed? Blackfish? Reader + Black Wind? But what to lose to fit them in? In the end, it is Winter and a more modest ambition was chosen. Is this a mistake? Depending on set-up and opponent's house and agenda, 1st plot is either Time for Ravens, Loyalty Money Can Buy (too stall for set-up) or Forgotten Plans (KotHH First Snow). But then, when ready, the 3 2-claim plots ending with a Great Sept hand reset should apply sufficient pressure. The deck only really wants to play 1st the turn it plays White Raven else it prefers 2nd (Marauders, Mance, Iron Victory, Captain all trigger in defence, Moqorro, Fisherman are great 2nd). To help this are the Kingsroads and Sparr (opted against Bay of Ice which is double-edged without Cogs/Escort build). There are lots of areas that can be improved as I've never played Greyjoy, not even in our casual melee, probably due to the disappointing deluxe set compared to the others. So please feedback any thoughts and ideas on how to improve this. Untested, it feels very janky yet I think there's a good foundational idea in there, poorly exceuted by a joust noob. For example, should I play Rule By Decree? I think that would be Win More so I opted for the safety of the Loyalty stall to set up your control. Based on my Magic background, you certainly don't mix land destruction with hand destruction because the former does the job sufficiently, allowing you to win the game with opponent unable to play his huge hand due to the Marauders and Theon. Also the value of RBD is diminished by Kingsroad, which plays a valuable part pre-empting plays with sub-optimal timing to prevent possible loss of that card. However, there's not much saves (4 Recur, 3 Mines) so I'm risking the opponent coming back into the game without RBD. I opted for Loyalty but is this a mistake? I also considered Blockade and Attack From The Sea, the latter too scary with Mines rather than Cliffs, the former seems petty compared to the other plot effects. as I'm running 3 Storming the Shore for burst denial mass kneeling of cheap locations. Again was this the right call, to go for the pressure of 2-claim plots over purist choke? The deck is very reliant on Winter (Marauders, Catelyn and Fisherman are key, Balon and Robb are nice pumps) so is having 3 White Ravens too much? If I start with one after set up replenish, it saves me a plot. And there's Lost Message now, with I assume players anticipating seasons adding Carrion Birds. Is this a typical noob playing it too safe? Advice please? I also have rules questions on Prized. I assumed... 1 Stalwart still triggers Prized? (else it's hello Ned and Kyle) 2. If I save them (with blank text dupes or other effects), this does not trigger Prized? Could somebody please enlighten me if my above understanding of this opaque keyword is correct? So many other questions on Prized: 3. I assume it's qualified (as per Jaqan) but will Pentoshi remove it? I assume blanking text does? 4. What if it is Enslaved/Mel's Favour and killed? However, it is points 1 and 2 which are crucial to this idea (although Prized can be viewed as a way of replenishing empty House for Power steals). Can anybody help on improving the idea and/or clarifying how prized works above please? Cheers for reading this. |

I squirm at this, my first ever attempt at a GJ deck, as I would make multiple improvements as my GJ game has developed.
Just quickly revisiting this build, I think these are the changes I would make:
-1 Arya. +1 Boros Blount (not a fan of Longship Grey Ghost for recurring shadows trigger)
-1 Coldhands (strangely doesn't work here as opponent is choked of fatties and can't be saved), +1 Tycho Nestoris (for Marshalling draw)
-1 Nymeria (only 3 Catelyn, 3 Theon, 1 Robb eligible, Viserys in every Targ deck), +1 Longship Black Wind (for Power attacks, see below)
-3 Storming the Shores (Newly Made Lord etc for rarer Pentoshi), +3 Support of the Kingdom (because slow choke, not Ice tempo choke)
-1 Forgotten Plans (Rivers meta now has Reveal effects), +1 of Art of Seduction, Counting Favours, Summoning Season (!) or Men of Pride
Even with these changes, I still feel it may be janky, inconsistent. Any further suggestions to make it less hit-and-miss is more than welcome.
