Deck Name: | Lygophobia (1st Place, Norwich UK SC) |
Deck Contents: | Total Cards (63) House (1) House Targaryen (Core) x1 Agenda (1) House of Dreams (ARotD) x1 Plot (7) Valar Morghulis (Core) x1 Marched to the Wall (LoW) x1 A City Besieged (CD) x1 City of Lies (CoS) x1 City of Soldiers (TBoBB) x1 King's Landing Coup (AToTT) x1 Fear of Winter (BtW) x1 Character (30) Jhogo (OSaS) x1 Magister Illyrio (VM) x2 Shadow Seer (FtC) x3 Archmaester Marwyn (CD) x1 Aegon Targaryen (SoW) x2 Viserys Targaryen (Core) x1 Ser Jorah Mormont (WLL) x1 Daario Naharis (WLL) x1 King's Landing Assassin (SaS) x3 Ser Arys Oakheart (TK) x1 Ser Jaime Lannister (TK) x2 Ser Preston Greenfield (TK) x2 Varys (SaS) x1 Young Griff (VD) x1 Shadow Parasite (HtS) x3 Venomous Manticore (AJE) x2 Syrio Forel (TftRK) x1 Khal Drogo (WotN) x1 The Brazen Beasts (ARotD) x1 Location (18) The Dragonpit (TftRK) x1 Aegon's Hill (TTotH) x1 Meraxes (TBC) x2 Meereen Tourney Grounds (ODG) x1 Meereenese Brothel (BtW) x1 Summer Sea (QoD) x3 Eastern Fiefdoms (QoD) x3 Khal Drogo's Tent (Core) x1 Temple of the Graces (Core) x3 Kingdom of Shadows (KotS) x2 Attachment (5) Harried by Dragons (VM) x3 Flame-Kissed (Core) x1 Dragon Skull (CoS) x1 Event (10) To Be a Dragon (SB) x3 Pyrophobia (FtC) x3 Incinerate (VM) x3 Ward (VM) x1 House of Dreams location is either the Dragonpit or Aegon's Hill, depending on the match-up (assuming you know before choosing the location of course - remember those pre-game coinflips!). The 'centrepiece' card of the deck was Pyrophobia, which combos amazingly well with either HoD location - bounce stuff to move to dead pile with Hill, or find it easier to trigger 'phobia with Pit. The character base is predominantly Targ good stuff, with a few jankier choices because of the match-up. Manticore goes tremendously well with Pyrophobia as well as cards like Khal Drogo and Brazen Beasts - both of which also go very well Dragonpit, Harried by Dragons, Aegon Targaryen, etc. Locations are incredibly standard, as are attachments (Harried excepted, which combos with the aforementioned characters and Pyrophobia while also providing deck-thinning). Events I have are reasonably standard, with the exception of the cheeky copy of Ward, which was in as more of a 'fun' event that I thought would be hilarious if I could use it to snag a voltron character with - didn't see it once all day. Plots are a bit different on two counts - firstly no Threat, secondly yes Fear. Fear I found worked really well for me in a lot of ways. Firstly it was a strong two claim plot, secondly it slowed down rush decks, thirdly it kept the number of characters on the table to a manageable amount, and perhaps most importantly it was unexpected. The other common Targ burn restricted cards like Feast or Long Lances require influence, and while Street Waif could've been nice I decided I was already supremely vulnerable to a burn mirror match so I left her be too. I was between Refugees and a plot restricted, and Buz Hannon (OKTarg) suggested Fear, which was an amazingly good shout. Threat I left in the binder because of the aforementioned weakness to burn - with Aegon on the table a LOT of my own characters would die too, far more than I'd like, and ultimately I felt the other plots were more important. Having played the tournament with the deck I'd consider cutting the To Be A Dragons - I literally didn't play a single one all day, and often they were a dead card in my hand. Not enough characters worth bringing back (3 cost harder to achieve when there's 2 for shadows, limited to Targ, required me to have played King's Landing Coup when often I had other plots I'd rather play), plus they hindered setup to boot. I'd be tempted to cut them and change Coup for Sin. Otherwise, for a completely untested deck built the day before the tournament I was very happy with this (as the win would imply!). Tourney Report to be linked when it goes up. |

Didn't know Pyrophobia could work like that, as I always presumed that when strength reduction was from a passive effect (like Dragonpit) there was no activation for the Pyrophobia to be "after".
I've got an article on the Team Covenant site going up in a couple hours where I talk about Fear of Winter as the restricted card in dragonpit decks. I would definitely like some of your input having recently played the deck yourself. I'll share it on the dragonpit deck thread later today at some point.
Looks like a fun, cool deck and I'm thankful the few tweaks I suggested didn't backfire too badly!
Venomous Manticore FTW!
@Asklepios - Thanks! With Pyrophobia and 'Pit, just to be clear - the Pit isn't always providing an effect you can trigger Pyrophobia from, but rather the moment the character enters play (or you put a card into shadows to activate Pit), the Pit gets turned on and lowers each character's STR by one at that moment. So you can trigger the event then.
@agktme - Awesome, please link it! My knowledge is very basic (it's this deck and this deck only, essentially), but I'm sure it'd be a great read nonetheless.
@widowmaker - Haha, thanks! Very much not true (I don't even consider myself the best player in my meta), but I appreciate the compliment still
@OKTarg- Your wish is my command, and thanks again for the help!
Here's the article. This one talks of my basic experience and impressions, I plan to write a follow up working through various card choices in the near future.
For Science!
The entire regional should have that format! Take a big box of cards and shuffle them up. Deal out 60 random cards to every participant. May the best player win.
