Do the Greyjoy's scrape the gold off Viserys, or melt some new gold?

Sure. They also tame Direwolves, reuse King's blood or venoms that already killed people or forge new marriage pacts or ward guys...and much more. Those Greyjoy's are magicians!

Definitely inspired by the show:

I didn't read the books, but in the TV show all GJs looks like bums. Was it the intention of show creators?

GJs remind me one quote from Pulp Fiction: "No Jules, you’re gonna be like those pieces of s**t out there who beg for change. They walk around like a bunch of fu**in’ zombies, they sleep in garbage bins, they eat what I throw away, and dogs piss on ’em. They got a word for ’em, they’re called bums."

Lol I can read the books later, when I have some free time. But it still doesn't explain why the Greyjoys are depicted in the show as Hobos. I thought they should be like some kind of vikings. But they are not shown like that at all... the general impression of them is that they are like Pikeys but instead caravans, they have ships.

They are depicted rather well in the show (except for Euron, he's a pale shadow of book Euron), barren islands, harsh climate, creating hard men, and a culture of raiding and pillaging the mainland. But they're definitely not some gorgeous looking vikings. :)
