Seems that this card will be a bit too strong once the card pool expands.
This card will be exactly as strong as it was designed to be when the cardpool expands. Now you cannot depend on this event often enough.
Hmmm, we'll see. The fact that it's loyal, 3 cost and a Dominance Action brings it back a peg, but printed cost 6 or lower will be most characters, and you take control of it indefinitely.
Just compare the cost- effect ratio on this card to The Things I do for Love card. This card is very much above the power level..
I want to make sure I understand the card, too - if My opponent steals my Loras, I can play another Loras, correct? Or not, because it's "my" Loras under "his" control?
It only steals non-uniques so that won't be a problem.
...of course. I really ought to start reading better.
The Things I Do For Love works on both unique and non-unique characters and can be used during Challenge phase to bounce someone to hand and win because the new strength ratio or even get an unopposed one in.
Things I Do also means any attachments will drop off and need to be repurchased (or they might get discarded in intrigue challenge by lannisters before next turn comes so they might never get back on board)
Take The Black affects a small amount of the 4+ characters and only in dominance phase (so after opponent already got value out of them, like winning combat and killing your character or emptying your hand doing intrigue)
Is Take The Black, when it gets a very lucky steal of the ideal non-unique enemy, a bit better economy gain? Sure... that's how it's designed and balanced for. It's a Night's Watch card, not a Lannister card.
Night's Watch's design is that money is not readily available and must be gotten by alternative means, that often have prices/stipulations. (Sacrificing cards from hand with Old Hunter, sacrificing a card by using Meagre Contribution, hoping to fix your economy by stealing an army from someone that you couldn't afford yourself normally), etc.
The Things I Do For Love reflects that money is so easy to acquire for Lannisters that they can afford to be somewhat wasteful if they want strong effects. They're inherently different than Greyjoy or NW that are meant to have low costs for things to make up for low income.
This is one of those cards that will grow in power as the card pool grows. Imagine taking control of something akin to the power level of The Conclave from First Edition. Non-unique are garbage right now, but will eventually get better.
I hope we won't see something like conclave in this edition at all.
I doubt we will see something THAT strong. I'm just using it as an example. Non-unique characters WILL get stronger. They have to, because they certainly can't get any weaker. Plus, you can't just keep making only the Unique characters the strong ones.
this is one of the strongest cards NOW even.
Situational. If it happened in Marshalling or Challenges it'd be better. The fact that it's Dominance means they already got at least one turn out of the character most likely. Plus, since there really aren't very many good non unique characters, you are just stealing claim soak.
If you are using it to steal claim soaks it probably means you do not know hot to use it properly.
This is a hunting card. You do not shoot the rabbit, you wait for deer or bear. You do not have to use it every time you have it in your hand.
Also, if you are waiting a lot, and made to go first then you have to decide whether to save 3 gold you could have used to marshal a character for the off chance they do marshal a suitable target in their turn. Obviously the Hunter helps a lot here, but if you don't have him then playing at a -3 gold handicap each turn is just not worth the benefit.
Undoubtedly the effect is powerful, but I think the majority of the time you are better off just using it to grab a 2 coster (ideally with an int icon!) rather than waiting for a unit the opponent might mot even draw.
What non unique card is worth waiting for to steal with this? I'm actually curious, because I don't know all the cards yet. I can't think of a single non unique card that would be worth waiting on. MAYBE Moneylender?
King's hunting Party, Drowned men, Gold Cloacks, Palace Spearman, Ranging Party, Unsullied, Wardens of the reach. Starks army is not that good but still. Plus any Neutral Wildling.
I gave one from each house plus bonus. Especially good catches are: Baratheon's, NW's and Martell's.
I think thah NW's gold managment will greatly improve with CP - it has to, because it is horrible. We can move that discussion to forum though.
Not many at the moment.
The 4+ cost non-uniques are decent but most of them are also situational.
Ironically, one of the best characters you can steal at the moment are Ranging Party and Wildling Horde because they have good stats. Rattleshirt Raiders are also great because they are the best attachment control in the game atm.
The rest are all situational though.
Unsullied, Drowned Men, Wardens of the Reach, Palace Spearmen all require some support from your deck or plotdeck to truly shine.
Vanguard of The North and Hunting Party are both monocons. Now the chance of King's Hunting Party gaining intrigue is quite good since you're probably facing a baratheon. The same for vanguard of the North, your opponent is probably running war plots.
King's Hunting Party is probably the best target I've seen so far, and I doubt many Bara decks will run it. It won't ever have an intrigue unless you are playing against another Bara deck. Not worth it imo. Plus, it's still in the dominance phase, and it's still 3 gold. It's not good right now, but will get better as time goes on.
So you are benefitting from any character that costs 2 or more. The more the better obviously,
Plus if ou sit on 2 gold through challenge phase and commit highly in attack you opponent will think you have a tears/put to the sword. And over defend in their challenges then using the forest hunter you can gain 1 more gold to then take their character which they probably commited to a defense.
And if they had something that was standing this can swing dominance in your favour.
While I don't think this card is very good, I think it is possible to have some sort of aggressive NW build based off of this and marched to the wall. If your opponent is left with Tywin and a chud at the end of challenges, make the chud take the black and march tywin straight to the wall. Still isn't really competitive but would really irritate people, kind of like a things I do for love situation with the trade off that its in dom but you keep the character.
While taking anything is usually worth it (they lose a claim soak, you gain a claim soak), I've found that my opponent only has a non-unique on the table in perhaps 60% of all dominance phases, and fewer when I've won a Military challenge that turn.
Having the card be dead in hand is very painful, especially for Night's Watch because their draw engine uses up extra "slots" in hand for the Ravens.
If you take knelt character how do you put it in your control - knelt or standing?
Little question about this card: If you steal a char with some power on it (because of renown or something else) does he take that power with him?
You bet. It will contribute to your 15 power when you steal them.
