If you were to chose someone to kill you control, but save them (ie-MaesterAemon saving himself) would this still trigger? Or, becuase the kill cost was interrupted, would it make it null?

Since the last sentence starts with "then", the previous part had to take full effect for the last sentence to produce results. So, if you save the character you control, the part before "then" didn't take full effect and your opponent won't kill a character he controls. Take a look at the word "then" in the Rules Reference pg. 21.

Satazu thanks. Clear on that now, however can we even save the character at all seen as it is a Forced Reaction? Must a character be killed, not saved at all. What I mean is, can you choose someone to kill, and save them instead, if you don't care about triggering the 'then' section?

Of course you can. The "forced" part of the reaction means that you cannot voluntarily ignore it. After Mag wins a challenge, you have to deal with the reaction. How you cope with it (i.e. killing one of your own guys or saving it or cancelling the reaction altogether with cards such as Treachery or Begging Brother) is up to you.

Perfect. Thanks Serazu

I think he should be intimidating. Thematically and for playability also.

Mhm yeah I already have it integrated in my NW JoS Wildlings deck. That "then" is really a bummer. But he still has very nice stats and if u have Aemon in play u can always choose who it will hurt more to kill a char, u or ur opponent. So I kind of wanna test him further. ^^

Same here. I'm finding it's good if you have enough chuds to trigger it, otherwise you have to keep wasting saves. I think Mags would work well in Greyjoy or Stark where there are quite a few trigger from killing your characters. His strength is beast though, and if you give him intimidate with Brotherhood agenda, he pays his way.
