I really like him as a 1x, but I'm not sure I'd want more. I'd rather not set him up, as duplicates encourage, and he is likely to die to claim, especially on the First Snow turn where his ability is most important.
Althought your opponent is likely to attack military first, knowing that you might be playing this card.
He can still eat the Marched next turn. I usually can suffer one military claim on the First Snow turn, but claim plus marched usually cripples me.
Wondering if Dracaris and Castle Black would work this way during/after an Intrigue challenge:
- Play Dolorous Edd
- Dracaris against Edd
- Castle Black increases Edd to Str 5
- Challenge ends
Assuming you win the challenge, can you call Edd back to your hand before Castle Black wears off, thus saving him from Dracaris?
Cheers!
Edd would be Dedd from Dracarys before you have a chance to use Castle Black, unless you are first player and trigger Castle Black BEFORE the opponent plays Dracarys, or you are able to cancel Dracarys with something like Hand's Judgment.
Unless the opponent's Dany is out and is standing, then he's Dedd regardless (if you don't have Hand's Judgment).
Unless you have the Wall...
Rember, each of these things is a player action.
Kneel Faction Card: Get Dolorous in Play (knelt as a defender)
Opponent has opportunity to take an action (let's say... he kneels his faction card, in order to get a reduction on Dracarys)
You get an action, and you use Castle Black (+2 STR, bringing his total to 5 until the end of the challenge)
Your opponent has a couple options here:
- He or she chooses not to use Dracarys!, because it wouldn't kill Dolorous now - it's best saved for later. You probably win the challenge on defense, and can bounce him to hand.
-Your opponent decides to Dracarys! anyway (because it would help him win the challenge) and wins the challenge... so you can't bring Dolorous back because you didn't win. The lingering -4 effect lasts until the end of the phase, but the +2 from Castle Black expires when the challenge ends, so Dolorous Ed dies at the end of the challenge (Step 4.2.6)
-Your opponent decides to Dracarys! anyway, for no good reason, but still loses the challenge despite the -4 STR modifier. Dolorous Ed can return to hand safely in step 4.2.2, dodging the death that waits for him in 4.2.6)
Step numbers from p25 of the Rules Reference.
Thanks for that, guys, most appreciated.
Can you assign additional defenders after Ed is put into play as a defender?
There are action windows both before and after declaring defenders. So I think you can declare defenders after he's played; you just can't sandwich him between declaring defenders.
Am I correct in thinking that you can Treachery him and he just stays in hand with the House Card knelt?
Unfortunately yes.
that is depressing and the same would be for ser alliser then.
