Small application in joust is that you could give it to a Warded Martell guy of yours if you anticipate getting them back soon.
Bigger application in melee (yes it exists!) is you can bribe someone with it - perhaps for them to make the challenge and you to bestow lots of your guys and 1 or 2 or his renown.
Biggest one is in a 2 x 2 event where you and your partner are running Martell cards.
