The fact he is released at the same time as Valar Morghulis is rather appropriate. Saving is about to be really big. Good ol' Greyjoy is finally getting some cards to go solidly in a direction other than just unopposed challenges all day.
He seems like a nice pairing with Maester Aemon.
Is that combination sufficient to offset high-claim mil-challenges, or does multiple claim happen simultaneously?
I believe the combo would allow Aemon to save himself, stand, and save another character. I think the deaths do happen simultanesouly, but it doesn't matter since saves (inc. Aemon's) are interrupts and thus happen before the death actually occurs (and therefore so does Aeron's reaction to the interrupt).
The Triggering Condition section of the rules reference (pg. 22) says:
"If a single occurrence creates multiple triggering conditions (such as two characters being killed simultaneously by a claim 2 military challenge), those triggering conditions are handled in shared interrupt/reaction windows, in which abilities that refer to any of the triggering conditions created by that occurrence may be used."
Might that mean that all save interrupts would have to be used before any reactions to the saves?
I'm not sure what "satisfy claim infinitely" is intended to mean here?
Remember that for a high claim military challenge, all claim targets are chosen by the player at the same time and that it is illegal to choose the same character to satisfy claim multiple times when resolving a single challenge. So, you cannot choose Aemon twice for a 2-claim military challenge, no matter how many times you can save him, for the same reason that you cannot discard 2 dupes from the same character and say you have satisfied a 2-claim military challenge.
That said, it is possible to use Aemon, a second Night's Watch character, and Aeron Damphair to save both characters in a 2-claim MIL challenge. Here's how:
1. Lose a 2-claim MIL challenge.
2. Choose Aemon and the second Night's Watch character to die for claim (at the same time).
3. Interrupt #2 by triggering Aemon's ability (happens before anyone actually dies for claim) to save himself - kneeling him as cost.
4. Reactions to #3 nest - meaning they are triggered and resolve before any more Interrupts to #2 are triggered. So you trigger Aeron now, standing Aemon.
5. With no more reactions to #3, you go back to Interrupts for #2. You can now trigger Aemon's ability to save the other Night's Watch character - kneeling him for cost. (Note: You are not interrupting the same triggering condition with Aemon twice here because "kill Aemon" is not the same triggering condition as "kill other NW character," even though both characters are killed by the same effect.)
6. Reactions to #5 nest - same as above. So you can trigger Aeron now to stand or kneel the other Night's Watch character saved in #5.
7. With no more reactions to #5, you go back to Interrupts for #2. If there are no more, you proceed to resolving the claim effect.
8. Resolve the claim effect and kill any character chosen in #2 who was not saved somewhere between #2 and #8.
End result - you have saved both chosen claim targets (Aemon and the other NW) from claim. Aemon is knelt (you can't stand him with Aeron in #6 since he wasn't saved in #5), but the other NW character is probably standing (assuming you did the thing that is most advantageous in most situations during #6).
Lots of fun options with his ability, some real potential for strategic plays. I like that it makes military challenges an offensive weapon even if your opponent has saves for days.
The intrigue icon helps a lot. I'm always searching for intrigue in Greyjoy and the coreset Damphair lacks it, while also having a situational ability.
So, if I have this character, and I play Valar, and opponent has saves for their characters (dupes etc), does this reaction trigger from each of his attempted saves? Ie, can I kneel each of his saved characters ? If so - beast.
From this :
"If a single occurrence creates multiple triggering conditions (such as two characters being killed simultaneously by a claim 2 military challenge), those triggering conditions are handled in shared interrupt/reaction windows, in which abilities that refer to any of the triggering conditions created by that occurrence may be used."
It would appear so.
(I understand ktom has explained a very elaborate example of how this interacts with Aemon, but I got lost in the specific complexities of that example and needed to ask this Aemon less scenario)Thanks
Yes you kneel out your opponent's board on any valar, whether he lives or not. You can also stand your own saves in that scenario (even handed or core stannis or bad decisions on a filthy)
It's also very nice in mil challenges, when your opponent saves with dupes and has to kneel the saved character. To stand yours with ironmines, bodyguard, etc. is also nice.
Yes he is strong, but i also feel like he had to be a 5-coster. I've build a deck around him cause I'm bored of Greyjoy unopposed, but unfortunately it's worse
