I actually liked playing non-unique characters, but not anymore :D, rip guys.

After heavy testing this guy I can honestly say his ability is very conditional. Against Starks or Tyrells chances are you will not see any non-uniques. This makes me question if new Old Bear Mormont will see play at all :(

If you do manage to play against a decent amount of non uniques, I found this works well with a weirwood bow, to guarantee your pick of the crop. Take the strength down before winning. For instance if going against debuffs , it helps get the str back in your favour.

This guy makes me happy because I finally might be able to make an offensive NW deck. a ranger themed attack deck is interesting with a mix of wildlings maybe and the awesome new stewards. Qhorin and put to the sword would be great, if the opponent is running uniques I guess that makes them susceptible to march and a lot of other kill/removal/resets. His renown and no attachments cept weapon is also nice, good def against milks. probably banner wolf or have NW rangers as banner in order to use ward for their other lower cost uniques. it seems like a deck that could punish the opponent for playing only uniques. it may not be tournament quality but it really seems like it will be a ton of fun :)

It works defensively too :) But I'm with you on the offensive NW deck. I have a mainly wilding themed NW presently , with Jon Snow and Mance as the headliners. Quorin defintely works well. With King Beyond the wall attachment on a character and a 2 claim plot card, I'm getting three kills when I go all in Mil. If Jon or Mance are milked- Rattleshirts raiders sort that out. I've been waiting since first cycle to get a wildling deck going and now it's very viable.

I envy everyone who can use Qhorin every round. My experience is that I can use him effectively once in about 3 games. Wildling decks are wrecked by Half Hand, same Martells and NW, but every other fraction can just decide not to marshall (edited mistake)non-uniques.

My biggest problem with Qhorin is that, he is a "6". One would like to build a deck around him, but he is not stable enough. "Nice Bi-icon with Renown is nice", however he cannot jump into "Big&Important 6-gold-characters".

@Gramytron Just wanted to ask : Why would opponent chose not to marshall uniques?

*non-uniques.

Fixed original post.

there are a few disadvantages to uniques, mainly the dead pile mechanic. with things like valar and wildfire if you play a deck with only uniques at more than 1 copy, once they die they become dead cards in the hand. in the first edition of game of thrones, i actually looked for strong non-uniques and they made up more of my deck than actual uniques, just because valar existed. also in terms of challenges, sometimes its better to have a lot of non-uniques vs a duped up unique. for example 3 copies of tywin vs 3 copies of a sir gregor's mauraders... yes tywin could theoretically win any challenge he chooses, on the other hand, the 3 non-uniques could push through their own unopposed challenges or combine their str to win 1 challenge etc. non-uniques main purpose for me (the low cost ones) are mainly for chuds/claim soak. like in lannister or tyrell, having more than 3 uniques with renown on the board becomes a big deal because of cards like wildfire. also march punishes a player relying on dupes. conversely it could also be said that dupes are great against cards like valar and varys in that they can survive wipes, but then again 1 milk could also ruin your investment. board-state wise, its mostly the powerful effects of uniques that matter, so having them milked even at 3 dupes is different against a non-unique generic army on the other side with more board presence. typically I know a lot of people that do not want to play certain uniques out early in the game, example: I have 1 copy of Knight of Flowers in hand vs lannister or martell who finishes his marshalling with 1 gold left and I have no or low intrigue str on the board, there is a risk that he may be discarded, yes but is it worse than him being outright killed by the potential tears? things like that...

It's not that simple.

1. game economy - having 3x unique vs 3x non-unique character it means that in the first case I have to generate N gold and in the second case 3x N to play all those.  If I don't have that much gold, non-uniques are dead weight in my hand.

2. Wildfire - in general is usually hurting non-uniques, as those do not stack

3. March to the Wall - is only a discard, you can still play an unique character, even if discarded with 1 copy

4. Dead pile - there are plots to raise dead (Close call, Ghosts) and also there some characters/abilities which can raise dead characters as well

5. Numbers - there are about 100 non-uniques characters and about 200 unique one in the game, restricting yourself to non-unique only you are using only 1/3 of the pool

6. Bodyguard - is working only on unique, as there is only 1 lord which is non-unique and no lady

7. Abilities - in general are better on unique characters

... and I could go on, point is that having unique/non-unique is only a part of the consideration when you build your deck.

And regarding to Qhorin, it is exactly his ability to trigger on defense which makes him so strong.  Also he can't be milked and has renown. He is practically 2 claim in military on attack and 1 claim on defense with ability to remove some chud and having claim hit the stronger target.

The only good counter to him is either Tears of Lys or stronger MIL characters to not let him win.

"Qhorin is 2 mil claim" is PR bullshit. It cant happen, but when Reducers aren out you might not be able to fine target for His ability. It os al. Probablynmeta dependent but from my online and real life experience he just does not trigger enough times.

We have now enough uniques not to inculde anything except reducers, that is non unique. As mentioned, there some are builds that are hurt by Qhorin, but any game is affected by Edward, Randyll or Jaimie when they hit the tablet.

Edit, sorry for spelling but I AM loosing with my tablet's auto-correct every Second Word and I just cannot Chance everything over and over again :\

like I said, its not for tournament play are any serious competitive thing.  I know Qhorin is meant for defense what I am pointing out that for a fun deck, it makes offensive NW a little more viable. it is a game you know, and for mostly casuals like me, theme outplays competitiveness a lot.

this guy is a nonmilkable renown. He's basically a 3x in every possible deck that can include him. I don't get all this fuzz about his ability.

Too expensive for Varys cancer decks.
