Use Ever Vigilant (Core) to have him attack multiple times with his attack of 8.
Self Preservation (Core), Zigil Miner (KD)
and Timely Aid (TRG).
Honestly, he's probably too expensive to ever count on being able to pay 6 precious Tactics resources to play him traditionally. I mean, we have all had those games were we are just FLOODED with resources with nothing to spend them on but that's usually more of a sign of your deck not producing the playable cards you need than just not needing the resources being produced.
But the game has so many ways to sneak allies like this into play now that he has gotten SO much better as times has gone on. Elf-Stoneing Beorn in can be a game-winning play against a combat-heavy or "Big Bad" quest. He's a perfect target for Vilya. And that's not even talking about the fact that he is one of the only cards in the game that can (in certain circumstances) be a better Sneak Attack than Core Gandalf.
Does he work with Sneak Attack?
EDIT: Nvm, he does. Simultaneous effects are solved in the order of the first player's choosing, as per the FAQ.
Next time I'll do a simple Google search before I post crap
That's okay--we have ALL done that at on time or another.
And he is a GREAT Sneak Attack...
Sneak Attack / Beorn in a Merry deck is just sick.
Sneak Attack + Beorn is sick in any deck. But yeah, that Merry readying is pretty sweet. Though if I'm running Merry for fun and profit I'm a bigger fan of the Merry/Brand jank
Worth noting that he's not a terrible candidate for Sneak Attack+Sword-Thain if you need Tactics resources. 1-Leadership+4-Neutral gives you a 1/3/3/6 that has access to effects like UC and adds a resource each turn.
I think I prefer just Sneak Attacking him so he can trigger his effect and bounce back to hand but in the right deck he could be a decent defender. Plus, 6 Hit Points aint nothing--especially if you're playing a Quest where Archery is a thing.
I especially like his Action not only from a mechanic, but also from a thematic standpoint: he fights decently like any human/elven/dwarven fighter (3 atk) and then he transforms into a massive bear to rip his opponents apart (8 atk) albeit for a brief period of time, losing himself into his newly assumed form in the process (leaves the board at the end of the phase), like any shapeshifter worth his salt would do. Beorn's inception was a flash of genius on behalf of the DT.
