Although Caradhras takes prime spot in the quest, this mountain is actually much more important in Tolkien lore. The peak of this mountain was the site of the final battle between Gandalf and the balrog. The Endless Stair rises from the deepest depths of Moria straight to the top of this mountain and ends at Durin's Tower, a lookout that was destroyed in the battle against the Balrog and its wreckage blocked the entrance to the stair from that point on. The purpose of the tower is never mentioned by Tolkien, but the dwarves sure put a lot of work into building it so it must have been important to them. Something to think about the next time you play this quest!
