If they engage you do you still deal the damage to your characters?
It seems that it is only if you decide to engage it?
When you engage an enemy, they are considered to engage you as well. Even if you optionally engage them. It still counts as them engaging you. There are some cards that specifically mention different effects if you "optionally engage" them.
