That is a pretty neat ability, likely even trumps Landroval (AJtR)

Very good to preserve heroes health. A must if you play with Beorn.

Sooo, here's my idea:

 

Deal X points of damage to Gloin. Then use Gloin's response to gain X resources on him. Then use Dori's response to redirect all those damage points to Dori instead.
 
4th step of Resolving Enemy Attacks uses "deal" and "assign" as synonyms. But there is distinguish between "deal points of damage" and "place damage tokens". The first is just virtual, and the latter can kill a character. So it looks to me, that example above is correct.

If Gloin (or Treebeard or Erkenbrand) do not physically get damage tokens placed on their character - then the effect cannot resolve.  You can't cancel, or redirect, the damage and still get the reward.
