this will stop a single run cold, for cheap. it would be amazing if it forced an encounter with the summoned ice, because as it is, the runner is probably going to jack out, you will have to rez the ice you dropped for full price, without the element of surprise.

sometimes though, you just need to stop a single run in order to score an agenda, and this should be good for doing that.

I see some potencial using this to get your ICE back after using it with Oversight AI or the awakening center.

Terrific card, basically perfect. Trap, costs 1 credit only, and allows to recycle ICE trashed due to Kraken, Parasite, Oversight AI or even the new Awakening Center.

It's also amazing with Chum in front of it, and used on the first turn it allows the Corp to save credits and rez a good ICE nonetheless (provided you have one more in HQ of course).
the one big problem with this guy is that Crypsis absolutely owns him.
Not really, token + 1 cash if corp payed 1... I'd call it ok'ish trade.
Crypsis/Darwin do deal with him nicely, but his still cost efficient even when broken. Surely getting free bioroid is what you wanted and didn't get. But counter like this still makes corp player not lose much (and probably even gain some small econ advantage).
yes, Crypsis loses a very small econ advantage, but that is outweighed by Runner getting to access the remote for a very small economy offset. don't get me wrong it is a very good card, just that Crypsis turns it into something very different from its normal effect.

Darwin also owns this card, even more than Crypsis, i just think Crypsis is a much more common threat.

Don't forget that Corps is allowed to trash his own ICE. I could see some interesting opportunities here.

Needless to say there are strong early game opportunities granting.
This card is a SICK early game ice. With all the new expensive ice in this deck odds are we might get one in our hand at the start of the game. This allows us to use an end game ice right at the start, sure you have to derez it afterwords but if you can install Heimdall 2.0 and they have to take it all. Bad day to be a runner.

How much expensive ice do you want to run? Currently, it's really unwise to run too many expensive ice. Also, the runner can just jack out befor ethey hit the other ice. This ice is basically 'End the run.' and then replace it with a derezzed bioroid.

you are misreading the card. you can install and rez Heimdall, sure, but then the runner just jacks out. no big deal.

like paradoX says, and i said in my first comment, this will stop runs cold, but it won't inflict surprise damage.

this means it isn't great in the early game at all. in fact, it makes navigating your ice more more predictable.

where it becomes great is in the mid and late game, when you only need to stop that one critical run in order to get to the next turn and advance your agenda.
This little fella is also saving you a click, and assuming howler isn't the first piece of ice it's also saving bits.

How is this saving you a click? You got to put it down as well.
I see Howler as sitting over Archives, or over econ assets like Alix (for example). Use him when Criminals pull the "surprise Sneakdoor", if you decide you want to defend that Asset, drop your Janus' and Heimdalls in front of Noise when he makes his Archive run, etc.

Pretty much what was said above; rez him to put a more useful Bioroid in-place to stop a run cold. Even better if you have the cash available to rez said Bioroid after the fact to dissuade the re-run.
Yeah, I can always let the subroutine hit, then jack out after I see what ice got laid down. Takes the surprise out of the ice, so I can always see if you have enough credits to rez it or not.
With everyone mentioning how everyone will just jack out after this fires...this guy looks like he'll be a playmate for whirlpool.

He is. But the timing...
I plan to combo this with whirlpool, then the runner is stuck running headlong into whatever I want (insert evil laugh here), and with running awakening centre I expect there will be a couple of bioriods in the trash.
Remember: Howler's subrountine is optional. You can keep it in play if you want to: which makes for a nice combo with chum in front of it.

Only just realised, but this could combo really well with Cell Portal as well - you don't have to trash Howler until the run ENDS, so if you can get them to hit it twice you can enjoy another install... assuming the runner doesn't jack after the Cell anyway.
