In theory you might get a surprise kill if the runner dropped low on cards, thinking themselves safe due to lack of running or being tagged.
But in practice only a very careless runner would allow themselves to fall below 2 or 3 cards vs an unflipped Jinteki Biotech.
I just don't see this ending very many games, in actual play, except perhaps vs inexperienced players.
Agreed that it won't end many . . . at least until the Runner gets desperate and starts making late-turn runs . . . or you drop a False Lead . . . or have Chairman Hiro and Valley Grid setup . . . or you rez that Komainu you've been sitting on concurrently with The Twins . . . or there's just a lot of attrition and squeeze in your setup . . . or the Runner is great at tutoring but poor on the draw . . .
but those threats certainly make the Runner slow down and play predictably, because, by the way, the Brewery is face down: the Runner has no idea if you are running it: only "Jinteki Biotech" "Spend 3 clicks to flip this card" is visible.
That's a much more dependable way to make use of this than hoping for a flatline: it narrows the field of play; it tightens the tolerances for error; it punishes aggression and risk.
The mere possibility of this being the real ID changes the runner's decisionmaking. So it doesn't even have to flatline him. Intimidation is enough.
Yes, I agree with that. I think that picking The Tank or The Greenhouse, but threatening The Brewery is generally a better play than actually picking The Brewery. However, to make the threat matter, every now and then, a corp player will need to actually pick The Brewery and pull the trigger on it.
Don't get me wrong, I think that Jinteki Biotech et al is a fantastic identity. I just think that The Brewery is the weakest of the three options over all.
If the Runner has a clone chip and Deus Ex in their heap, what's the latest they would have to trigger it to prevent a flat-line?
When your turn begins, before the first click. However, when you announce your first action (which would be flipping the identity) the runner can't just say "Oh, let me use Clone Chip before that". He has to announce it before you do. Otherwise, he gains knowledge which he can use retroactively to his advantage - and that's a Nono.
