In netrunner they are...
Even if the Runner isn't running any viruses, this still gives a STR 7 ETR for $3 (and a trace 1). Terminal 7 podcast pointed out this is hilarious in front of Chief Slee - even if the runner isn't running and viruses, they will still want to break the first 3 subs to avoid giving her tokens.
Macrophage + Rutherford Grid = Good
Macrophage + ChiLo City Grid = Great
