Corrupt Official- "Interrupt: When a [Scum and Villainy] objective would be damaged, discard this unit from your hand to cancel any amount of that damage." Can the Corrupt Official's ability negate the damage cost when using IDLYE?

You *can* but then you wouldn't get to copy the event. If you prevent the damage from going on the objective, then the cost(2 damage) has not been paid and you can't resolve the effect(coping the event).

Bummer, really? I was gonna play Lucrative in my Sith/Scum deck exactly for this reason. If that's the case I'll just put in Killing Cold or something.

My hope was that I could basically turn the Corrupt Official into a copy of another effect and avoid paying the damage cost. I see why that doesn't work now. Thank you for the clarification.

Are you sure about this?

The reason that I ask is that it says deal and not dealt, which I interpret from the FAQ ruling as being able to prevented and still trigger the Objective's ability. If you don't mind elaborating on where this breaks I'd appreciate it.

edit* I can see where the word cancel might make it so it prevents the costs from being paid, but I'm wondering when is the cancelling actually happening? (Corrupt Official's wording "objective would be damaged"  isn't super clear to me.)

Dengar's objective could prevent 1 of the damage correct?

The cost is 2 damage. So for the cost to be paid 2 damage needs to actually land on the objective. If the damage is prevented either partially or completely the cost has not been fully paid and the effect cannot resolve.

Damage getting removed is totally different. So back when Deploy the Fleet and Yularen were not restricted you could damage DtF 4 times, play Yularen to remove 2 damage, then damage it another 2 times, then play Executor for free. The cost was properly paid each time.

Don't try to read too much into the deal vs dealt distinction when it comes to costs of dealing damage. It's inconsistent, but established as such via Trust Me for quite some time.
