He comes out first turn and your opponent weeps.

... then he plays Jedi mind trick on Vader and now it´s your turn to weep, cause you´re all out of resources :P

Yeah, as Dark Side I rarely if ever play the big beat sticks first turn (since they can't attack). The surprise factor is much more valuable usually. 2nd turn is the sweet spot, especially for this vader IMO. Hopefully a couple guys survived from first turn and you can drop him and do a massive amount of damage with little defense.

This is the attack Vader, whereas the Sith Core Darth Vader is more about control.

This vader on turn one is good but the better opener is control room and tarkin/motti as that sets up vader and more on turn 2. but if you dont have tarkin vader is very legit. as for jedi mind trick, ur tricks are under imperial suppression :D

I'm afraid he's just not as good as I'd like him to be, and not at the same level as Core Vader.  I've heard others argue that this version is good, and any card w/ 4 force icons is valuable for edge at least, and it's not like Navy has a lot of high force icon cards or anything. . .

I like to house rule (can enhance the experience for me, though I use them sparingly and certainly not every game) an extra keyword for this Darth Vader:

Relentless (opponents cannot place focus tokens on this unit).

Can be very good against some LS builds.

That is definitely an ability I'd like to see on some DS units, yeah. I don't think that would be nearly enough to save this set, though.

Yeah, that Communications Officer=very poor unit.

This pod is pretty weak, even Vader isn't that impressive.

Does "each of your attacking units" in that card's text mean all units which are attacking during the whole DS player's conflict phase (against all 3 LS objectives) or only units which are attacking together with this Vader?

"While this unit is attacking". So only units that are also attacking while this unit is attacking would be eligible targets to gain a blast.

He only works while attacking, so he only affects the units that are attacking with him.

Does Darth Vader also get the bonus?  Or only other attacking units in the engagement?

Each attacking unit--so if Vader is attacking, he also gets the damage.

So did the game ever give any support to this pod to make it combo well? I’m thinking an aggressive navy deck with super cheap units to try to hang bang objectives in one go. Viable?

Trooper decks often fit that niche, but this set really doesn't fit well into them. Especially when you have Imperial Command (Set 026) which includes better resource options, two troopers, and Orbital Bombardment which acts as an always-on sort of effect similar to Vader's ability here.

Why is he not an Officer.

Why is he not an Officer.

We can only put down the design issues of this set to be an early days decision. It feels things were still being worked out back then and why some stuff worked and others didn't.

However I would suggest you check out the Fan Content where some of the Hoth sets were revised with minor changes and this set including Vader himself got a good playable boost.

Why is he not an Officer.

'Frozen in Carbonite' made a replacement card for Imperial Vader, giving him the officer title and a discard effect.
