When you have Coteaz, you have options.
Warlord
Order by: NameTypeCost
Total Cards: 0
When he was first spoiled, I was less than thrilled with Coteaz. However, Staging Ground/Snakebite Thugs/Evil Sunz Warbikers really added to his potential.
Here are some deck notes:
::Early game:: 1.) Coteaz has some great command potential due to his 8/8 start and wealth of solid 1 drop units. I generally haven't found Coteaz to need resources due to the cost curve, so I opted for Void Pirates and no Rogue Traders.
2.) Enginseer Augurs are a tricky call in the deck, but I feel with the extra starting resource, synergy with sacrificing, and scry element to snag a Formosan Black ship, they have really been an asset. I dropped down to 2 of these guys because generally, I don't want to see 3 in a game. Early game, use them on planet 1 without initiative (unless facing a pointless counter unit like BAVs or warlocks...) or utilize them with Coteaz as a command snipe.
*Vol 2 Edit*
As much as I like these guys... no command icons/ some odd "whiffs"/ missing out on a support because you can only snag one has made me reserve my stance on these guys for the time being.
3.) Coteaz' henchmen look weak on paper (more on that later) but it's very important to note that it's nearly impossible to command snipe them: Use this to your advantage to keep them alive until late game.
::Mid Game:: 1.) This is where the Snakebite Thugs/Warbikers/Rockcretes really shine.
2.) The deck has enough shields to put up a nice defensive wall.
3.) At this point, utilizing the "every planet has a friendly unit" element will let you start punishing an enemy warlord with Catachan Outpost and any of the Ork Allied units. Saving a resource or two will always make them think twice about attacking at a planet with their warlord present.
::Late Game::
1.) This is the trickiest and most fun part about the deck. There are Glodovan Eagle shenanigans, Allegra alpha strikes, Formosan Black Ship swarms, and Coteaz Henchmen + Preemptive Barrage ranged assaults. I recently played a game where Coteaz attacked three times during ranged because I stacked all my henchmen at his planet.
Allegra untapping a Formosan Black Ship is also an alternative win condition...an extra 4x 1/2 units are hard to deal with, especially when timed after an AoE.
Also, be aware that the eagle is a solid unit to attach and return to hand as a 3 shield card when you really need it.
::Deck Concerns:
Early nullify's can make an otherwise strong Snotling attack be a huge weakness. Traditional AE/Warpstorm issues still exist. I went up to two Inquis. Fortress to fight against the big threats.
I tried out the SM ally concept, and I think Eager Recruits work great with the Emperor Protects...but man, Snakebites and Warbikers give you the extra damage against tough or shielded targets. I think Snotling attack may be a *must* when running Ork allies to assist in combat maths.
I have never played Emperor's Warrant for effect yet...maybe that will change soon.
I have also not played against a true swarm/kith deck. I think Coteaz has a lot of counter-swarm elements with his 1 drops alone, but more testing needs to be done.
