Shadowsun has been one of my favorite warlords. So for the very last Russian Nationals (sigh...) I decided to once again take her out of the binder and see what I can achieve with her attachment-focused army.
Before the tournament I tried several configurations and finally settled on the build I had most fun playing.
Key points: - You have three different discounts (Enclave, Choir, Fragment), which may allow for some crazy resource efficiency. This is why all army units are Eldar except for Trailblazers and the sig squad. - It therefore helps to mitigate one of Shadowsun's downsides from the past -- a very predictable commitment. But now when you have some discounts out, don't be afraid to play, say, Armor on the Drones during deploy and/or commit your warlord somewhere else.
- This deck may put a lot of early pressure on the opponent with its great combat units (Furious Wraithblades, Destructors) AND a potential threat of buffing them up with your attachments. - The best control tricks you have are Mighty Wraithknight (don't waste them) and Tactical Withdrawal (a very solid and versatile card). - Some of your units can move themselves, some can be moved with Withdrawal or the sig event. That may set up a perfect Doom. - Pick attachments according to your meta.
Card choices: - I really like Missile Pod. Yes, you may lose tempo destroying an already exhausted support card at first, but you A) can put it out for free (which synergizes to the idea of not committing Shadowsun to P1) and B) you can recur Missile Pod over and over again from your discard pile. - Eldar Survivalist is just a warlord bait in some games and in most games you'll be able to play him for free via Enclave. I found that I don't need more than 1 though. Also, a Survivalist with Auxiliary Armor on is hilarious! - Deception is for 2 shields and for swinging tempo into your favor in the early stages of the game. It's also very satisfying to return a unit and discard an attachment from him in the process. - No Mercy is solid in this deck since I very often don't commit Shadowsun to P1. Always surprising for your opponent. Don't be afraid to use it early, not only for bloodying warlord. - Tactical Withdrawal can be used to commit Shadowsun to P1, attach something there for the battle and move her to the next planet out of the harm's way or for triggering another battle there. - Shrieking Exarch is a great Yvarn trigger and a solid body for Stealth Cadre.
Weaknesses: - Eldorath 😃 (I lost to xRAVEx's Starbane during the Finals)
But honestly while the deck is not T1, it's tons of fun to play! Try it.
PS. I usually play 51-card decks. Card #52 is For the Tau'va. Feel free to take it out.
