While I don't think this is a great card, by any means, I think it's received too much criticism. The fact that it can ready any card you control, not just characters, is huge. Ultima Thule is a prime partner for Audubon, and I disagree that Explorers have no synergy with Faculty and Students. I can think of at least 4 Explorers that are also Faculty or Students, and Archaeology Interns (which is a must with Audubon) is a Student too. And while you're running the Interns, Roald, Cookie, and perhaps Excavation Site, you might opt for Professors Morgan and Rice too, both of whom are Faculty.
Will Audubon trigger every time? No. But it only costs 1, and the potential payoff with Ultima Thule is well worth 2 card slots IMO.
What I love with cards like this, is that it can make committing against you very hard on your opponents turn. Your opponent never knows whether the top card will enable the ready, so that have to take a risk, or be slowed down by assuming you get to ready someone/thing for just in time for defense.
