(Before I say more, I want to make clear that this is a Fun Deck. It probably wouldn't hold much in a tournament. But where I'm from, there are no tournaments, virtually no one plays anyway and I only have the Core Set and TKatG. So yeah, don't try to rate this as a tournament-ready deck because it probably is not.)

So, as the name suggests, this is a Tesla deck and also one that tries to utilize The Festival. So, how does it work?

Well, ideally, you have at least one Festival in your starting hand and one Shub resource to play it. It would be even better if that resource is another Festival. Another card you should get out as fast as you can is either Claude Owen or Rite of the Silver Key. Once this has happened, the cycling can begin.

Basically the idea is to use The Festival to get cards in your discard pile and to either get them on the field with Claude Owen or the Rite OR to get cards with discard pile effects into the pile to power up Tesla. Of course, the most basic idea is to have one Festival as a resource and one on the field, to sacrifice the other one and use its second effect to get it back into a domain. You've got one more resource, one more card to get into the discard and one more token on Tesla.

But that's not all this Deck has to offer. It also has some nifty comboc to annoy your opponent and get rid of their characters. Sacrificing a Serpent of Yoth via Festival and forcing the opponent to also get rid of one of his characters is nice. Sacrificing a Serpent via Shocking Transformation to get a better character and forcing the opponent to get rid of a character is even more nice. But having Cthulhu on the field and sacrificing the Serpent forcing the opponent to sacrifice on both their and your turn...priceless. Especially when you use Claude Owen, Rite of the Silver Key, Unspeakable Resurrection, Gathering at the Stones or Shadowed Woods to get him back.

But when I use Claude Owen, my opponent also gets a character back!
That is of course true, but how about you use Shocking Transformation to not only kill your opponent's character right off again, but also get a character right from your deck into play? Even better: If the character you choose to get from your deck is a Hungry Dark Young, you can play another character from your hand or discard pile! That's three characters for 6 resources and one of them might even be Cthulhu himself!

But let's get back to the core player in this Deck: Nikola Tesla. Of course, there are several cards that can be activated from the discard pile. The Festival is the most important one, but there are also Vortex of Time, Scholar from Yith and Interstellar Migration. There aren't THAT many, but remember: Using The Festival, you can get exactly the cards into the discard you need. And if you drain a domain with The Festival attached to it to use the Scholar of Yith, then also use the ability of Vortex of Time, THEN sacrifice The Festival using another Festival on the field an then reattaching the sacrificed Festival to a domain, Tesla already got 3 success tokens. But yes, they don't help you that much if you can't destroy him. But that's not that hard either. To kill Tesla, you basically have 2 options: Get the Living Mummy on the field and sacrifice it for Cthulhu or the Shocking Transformation to wound Tesla (and every other character) and *boom* he's dead and you can begin to distribute the tokens. OR (and that's the recommended method), wait until he has enough tokens and then attach Summon Spectral Hunter to him. His skill will immediately drop to below zero, he dies and you get to collect your stories. You can even use the Spectral Hunter to give Tesla some tokens if, for whatever reason, you can't get any usable cards in your discard pile. If you combine that with Altar of the Blessed, you can even win a whole story with this.

Now to quickly glance over the not-so-integral cards. Dabbler in the Unknown can be used to give you a small headstart on a story. The Innsmouth Troublemaker is best equipped with the Sword of Y'ha-tallo. The Keeper of the Great Library can benefit from the total of 10 Yithian cards in the deck (which you can get into your discard pile selectively thanks to The Festival). The Lord of the Silver Twilight can give you Cthulhu earlier if you don't manage to get him via Claude Owen. The Mature Deep One might help you get rid of bothersome Atatchments. The Overzealous Initiate can give you extra reosurces (and you can even check of you'd want to lose the card by using Vortex of Time's discard pile ability or Scientist from Yith). Ravager from the Deep can help you defend a story. So can Slenderman. Priestess of Bubastis might help you get a character or two out. Cyclopean Stone profits from all the sacrificing in the deck (Cthulhu, Initiate, Dabbler). Pnakotus could help you get more cards into the discard. Shadowed Reef and Horrid Mutation can give you an edge in the Terror struggle. Pulled Under can maybe kill an opponent's character (or Tesla). So can Sacrificial Offerings.

Of course, this deck has one glaring weakness: If you just don't draw The Festival, Tesla or Claude Owen/Silver Key, it's pretty much doomed to fail. You really need a Festival and either Claude or the Rite on the field. If you have those, you can pretty much play any character you want from your deck and get everything you want into the discard pile. But if you don't draw those cards or draw them too late, it's pretty much over.

In my opinion the best card to pair with Claude Owen and a bunch of sacrificial stuff is
Professor Nathaniel Peaslee (TKatG). Which good because he comes in three in the expansion that you already have and is the some colour is Owen and Tesla.
The trick works like this. Revive Peaslee with Owen. Exchange Peaslee for an opponents card. Sacrifice the opponents card for some into the cyclopean stone to untap a creature (priestess of bubastis comes to mind as somebody you would like to use twice during a phase)... at the end of the turn Claude Owen forces peaslee back under your control !. Peaslee is cheap to play and you dont mind him dying when Claude is alive. Using his ability is expensive, especially with Claude Owen in conjunction so in the beginning you can only do it your opponents cheap creatures.

Second comment. You need to work on your deck list. Dont take it wrong im not a terribly experienced player but the relations between bodies (creatures) and non bodies (events and support) is way off. You have more events and support than creatures, something only reliable combo decks can get away with, not something you can do with the limited cardpool at your disposal. Shadow reef can be a good card in a deep one deck, but not in a deck with 2 (two) deep ones. And why do you put shadow reef in it? Is it, so hopefully you have a target for pulled under, a card you have also 1 copy of. The deck will be better with more bodies with terror than with more events or support that grant terror because you dont have enough bodies to make them effective. Replace cards like that, which are good cards if you manage to synergise them but not in this deck. Replace them with more cost effective bodies (look at casting cost vs icons and skill) Examples: Ancient Guardian, degenerate ghoul, fishers from outside, Mi-go scout (investigation!), Mystic bounty hunter (investigation!), watcher of the woods are relative cost effect core cards and Fthaggua & Willbur Whately (all icons !) again very cost effective from the Key and the Gate that will do more for you than shadowed reef, pulled under, sword of ythallo... Hungry star vampire could be nasty with the combo above but could also be a two edged sword but again very cost effective for casting, icons, skill.

Never take somebody's 2 cents as a personal attack, never take it as the universal truth either (especially not my advice :) ), but just as a challenge to improve your deck building skill (a limited card pool means less choices but the card choices are perhaps even more important than somebody with access to more cards to make a good deck) and enjoy the game...!
Oh, don't worry. I don't take good advice personally as long as it's well-meaning and not insulting ^^

Using your advice, I looked at some of the cards I could get rid of and some cards to implement. I also consider puttng
Hand of Aforgomon (TKatG) in, to maybe defend a story or two while I buff up Tesla.

And about the Shadowed Reef...to be honest, now that you mentioned it, I'm asking myself: Why DID I put that in there? It might be a remnant from an earlier build or maybe I just thought something like "if I can't use it, I still have a Cthulhu resource". Anyway, I'm going to throw that out. Will probably update the Decklist later.

I beg to differ!
Even with a limited card pool you can get away with having an equal number of characters and other cards. You just have to consider how you intend to make up for the smaller number of characters. Taking control of an opponent's characters is one obvious strategy, as is taking out an opponent's characters directly in any number of ways.

Here's a link to one of my recent casual decks that works that way: http://www.cardgamedb.com/forums/index.php?/topic/10577-coc-deck-polar-agency/
It may be a bit more challenging to play than a 'typical' deck with more characters, but I found it quite rewarding.
Ill grant you the caveat that you can have more non creature cards if these cards are focused on destroy / steal but I wouldnt go as far as parity if you want the best possible results. But maybe we should go play a lackey game one of these days and you can cream me and prove me horribly wrong. Id like that because I cant play as much as I like tabletop games and I dont have ways to find lackey players.

My point is Walters deck is all over the place in terms of what it hopes to achieve: he has cards in insufficient quantities to allow for niche effects: 1 copy of shadow reef for 2 deep ones; 1 shadowed woods for 5 Shub characters of which 3 are copies of Uniques. This deck would vastly improve with more creatures and less niche effects

And even though more focused Jhaelens deck can improve quite easily by two cards: paranormal specialist you have twice and no access to enforce day (that i see, maybe im overlooking), this is an ineffiicient card cost-iconwise if you cant use its ability! I would replace with either Giant albino Penguin or Captain Thorfinnsen (both At the mountains of Madness), both are more cost efficient and are more fun (as in provide more interactivity with polar of which you have9 copies in your deck vs 0 day... unless of course the paranormal specialist is there for a theme reason. Theme is a valid argument, just not an argument you make when you try to make the best deck possible with the available cardpool.

again my 2 cents no aggression intended
Thanks for your comments (although I'd have prefered it if you had posted them in the deck section so as not to derail this thread)!

Note, that I didn't disagree with you about the _choice_ of characters, just about the _amount_ of characters in Walter's deck.

Well, you are. There's three copies of Beneath the Burning Sun (SoA).

There's three reasons I preferred Paranormal Specialist (SoA) over Captain George Thorfinnsen (AtMoM): It's only cost 2, it's not Unique, and instead of granting me more of something I already have (i.e. wounding), it allows me to deal with Ancient Ones and a couple of other annoying characters, like Ravager from the Deep (Core). If I don't need the special ability because my opponent doesn't seem to use Villaneous characters, it usually gets resourced, unless I'm seriously character-starved.

The Giant Albino Penguin (AtMoM) is a good suggestion and I would have included it, if it hadn't been in one of my other decks, which I'd built at the same time (http://www.cardgamed...-in-the-ground/). I would probably have used it to replace Mr. Grey (CoC), though, whose ability I didn't actually get to use in any of my games, and because he's Unique, and the penguins aren't.
So...I've updated my deck. Does it take some time until the changes are shown in this thread? Or do I have to do something? I'm still new to this ^^

Anyway, until the list is updated, I just post the new list here:

As someone that has used Tesla in tournament play and done well with him, Yithian Scout and The Three Bells are really useful in getting Tesla going/ as a way to deal with your opponents characters.

Fair point, I looked over beneath a burning sun.
