Category: | Call of Cthulhu Decks |
Deck Name: | The Ancients are Coming |
Deck Strategy: | Ideal first round is as follows: first round you play Por XV 14:19 and Dabbler in the Unknown. Sacrifice the dabbler and get a domain of size 3 in the first round. You use that to summon Under the Porch which is sacrificed again to bring Nug. |
Deck Contents: | Total Cards (50) Story (0) Character (31) Cthulhu (Core) x1 Cthylla (SoK) x1 Dagon (Core) x1 Nug (SoK) x3 Shub-Niggurath (Core) x1 Y'Golonac (Core) x1 Dabbler in the Unknown (Core) x1 Cthuloid Spawn (SoM) x2 Dreamlands Fanatic (ItDoN) x2 Descendent of Yig (LR) x1 Family of Fishers (SotM) x1 Innsmouth Troublemaker (Core) x1 Lord of the Silver Twilight (Core) x1 Ocean Crawlers (Core) x1 Silver Twilight Temptress (THBtS) x1 The Carpathian (ER) x1 The Terror of the Tides (TTotT) x1 Black Dog (WoP) x1 Gibbering Soul (TAD) x1 Grim Wraith (TSotS) x2 Hungry Dark Young (Core) x1 Mind Eater (THBtS) x1 Priestess of Bubastis (Core) x1 Wooden Homunculus (SotM) x2 Watcher of the Woods (Core) x1 Support (9) Under the Porch (THBtS) x3 Cave Mouth (AtMoM) x1 Called by Azathoth (TSotS) x1 Sword of Y'ha-tallo (Core) x1 Eat the Dead (TAD) x2 The Vale of Pnath (SftSK) x1 Event (10) Called to the Sea (KD) x1 Deep One Assault (Core) x1 Get it Off! (Core) x1 Pulled Under (Core) x1 Por XV 14:19 (SoK) x3 Horrid Mutation (Core) x1 Shocking Transformation (Core) x1 Thunder in the East (KD) x1 Conspiracy (0) Ideal first round is as follows: first round you play Por XV 14:19 and Dabbler in the Unknown. Sacrifice the dabbler and get a domain of size 3 in the first round. You use that to summon Under the Porch which is sacrificed again to bring Nug. At the end of your first round you will have 2/3/4 domains and Nug in your hand. In the second round you can also get 3/5/5 domains and bring a couple more Ancient Ones (Nug with Under the Porch to get more resources in your domains, or other Ancient Ones with Shocking Transformation). I am sure the deck can be improved (more copies of Shocking Transformation or other Ancient ones), but I am afraid my card pool is limited ![]() |

In the latest FAQ (v3.1), Nug's text was changed to read "After you play Nug from your hand..." as opposed to "After Nug enters play..." Therefore, Bringing Nug in with Under the Porch no longer triggers his ability.
This does bring up one interesting question regarding Nug. Is Nug better described as a him or an it?
By the way, I like your Prophecy and Dabbler in the Unknown combo. Perhaps include x3 Dabblers to make it more reliable for your opening hand? Also, with so many cheap cultists you might consider Carl Stanford (SoA). He's an excellent Cthulhu character, especially on defense to slow down rush decks as you build up a domain to bring out your heavy hitters.
Your suggestions on more Dabblers and Carl Stanford are much more than reasonable. However, I only have a copy of the core set and no copies of SoA, so it is not an option for me. The main combo of the deck was Nug + Under the Porch, but other than that it is quite flexible. After I submitted my deck I saw someone who had the same idea but their main point was to summon Cthylla and sacrifice 5 characters per turn (combo-ed with some character-retrieving options).
However, the main point is that the latest FAQ completely destroys the main engine of this deck. Hmm...off to the drawing board then. Maybe I should splash some Order of the Silver Twilight to bounce back and forth Nug? I will have to check
Still, I think Shub + Silver Twilight is an interesting combination that you don't see too often so why not give it a try? I made a similar deck to practice with before Regionals focusing on The Three Bells (TUP) and other Silver Twilight sacrifice effects, though it never quite got off the ground. It might not have been my toughest deck, but it was fun to play.
I think it is pretty fair to consider most of the old ones as genderless unless otherwise specified. Shub-Niggurath is obviously female, Cthulhu is pretty much certainly male, but a lot of the others are just beings of vast power who most likely don't sexually reproduce. I mean Yog-Sothoth is a bunch of glowing spheres that exists outside of and yet coterminous with our entire universe. When you start getting into the territory of "to even gaze upon this being, much less to contemplate the nature of it's existence, is to invite total mental ruination" then I think gender is going to be one of those mysteries probably left unsolved. The question is really with what pronouns you are comfortable using for the gender neutral.

I own a sizable number of CCG-era cards and love a lot of the artwork. Part of me wishes some of the characters would be ported over to white border in a "best of" deluxe expansion (I'm looking at you Omar Shakti).
