Can I just confirm that this only works if he is still in play (rather than dead or discarded)?
Yes, cards have abilities only while being in play. Exceptions are explicitly described (e.g. 'return to your hand from your discard pile') and such effects are typically marked with an infinity loop in the card's title (see Pentoshi Guildmaster).
